I see your sand castle, and I raise you a moat.

According to Lainey who just checked the clock, it is "eighty hundred o'clock." Which means a day late and a dollar short for a blog post.

So I'll start with a Friday Photo Dump:

Photobucket
Friday Phone Dump photos are taken on the Instagram iPhone app (free) and dropped into a 12x12 collage using a photo editing software (Photoshop Elements works). I am @etst (enjoying the small things) on Instagram if you want to follow the feed.

I am exhausted in the same way tired full babies fall asleep, smiling. They are satisfied and fed. They want to sleep.

And no, I did not purposely drop that line in there to offer a nice transition, but hey, since it's there, I'm not letting it go to waste.

Hello, baby.

Photobucket

I reinstated my visitation rights with newborns this weekend after finally getting over a wretched cold. My reunion with Baby Ivy was very clouds-parting-angels-singing. I speak newborn. I dig babies.

And my girl? She's like her mama. She is drawn to babies, and something within her comes very much alive when she's cradling a tiny body. I asked her how she knows how to hold a baby so good. She answered, "I just know, Mom."

Photobucket

*****

With my mom here for only a couple more days, I feel the hourglass sand slipping, and fitting as much fabulousness into her trip has become my mission. We don't hold lofty standards for fabulousness. We settle for simple things--anything that writes good memories.

Photobucket

Lainey thought the yarn shop was boring which made me smile. Boring will make good memories too. I should know. I spent many an afternoon wandering fabric store aisles years ago, hiding between bolts of cotton muslin, begging my mom to step away from the Butterick books.

Photobucket

Being bored is perhaps the best catalyst for creativity.

Photobucket

Photobucket

*****

As all good showing-visitors-our-town adventures go, we ended up at the beach Thursday afternoon--a different beach, one that requires a little tram ride to get to but offers the advantage of softer sand, more shells and the interesting landscape of a pass that separates two beaches with a shallow pool and extensive sand bars.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

The sky was unusually vivid, the gulf quiet and calm. We couldn't have picked a better day to visit, and I felt a little guilty owning the praise when my mom applauded me relentlessly for picking this beach, for arranging this perfect day. Nature really delivered. But still--I said "You're welcome."

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

And sand castles? Listen. We don't mess around. We brought a plastic shovel and two pails and, while we started with a humble mound and some shells, some kid a few towels over tried to show us up with this flashy sand mansion. I saw Lainey eyeing it, and I'm sorry to say I suddenly turned into the mom who takes over her kid's science project to get him a blue ribbon. "George, wet sand!" I commanded as I tossed him an empty pail. "Lainey! Sticks, feathers, shells--anything you can find. Go! Bring it!" I ordered. And Mama done lost her mind, sculpting, scraping, patting. Our hard work rendered two homes--the summer beach castle and the winter sand cabin. Moat included.

Photobucket
Photobucket

I will chill out by third grade. Promise.

Photobucket

Photobucket

It is so nice having my mama here.

Photobucket

I've been slipping away to get work done when I can, to catch up on e-mails, do a little writing, clean up chores. It's hard sometimes to be "on vacation" with visiting family when there's a lot of work to do at home. And by hard, I mean good. Because we make more efforts to make memories. We wake up earlier, go to bed later and only choose the very best things to fill our time. We say "yes" to more opportunities, and at the end of the day we are exhausted but completely satisfied. There will be time for rest later. There will be quiet moments to pull back, settle down, recover. But memories take work sometimes. Amazing takes work.

And it's worth it.

I so loved reading all of the things you learned from your mamas, grandmas, and women who inspire you. So much good advice--thank you for sharing!

Congratulations to the
Popina swimsuit winner, Comment #414: The Whirling Dirvish: "My mom taught me that I am stronger today than the before and that I am the culmination of the sorrows, joys, struggles and triumphs of each and every woman before me. That having my daughters made me stronger and that it's my job to remind them of the same things she taught me. Oh, and that any day can be made better by new shoes :)"

Whirling Dirvish (I hope that's your real name because that would be awesome), please send your contact info to kellehamptonblog@comcast.net with the subject line POPINA WINNER, and start looking for a fabulous big hat to accessorize your new suit! Congrats!

I absolutely love my Live What You Love bracelet.

Wear your inspiration close where you can be reminded, or pick something out for a friend at Honeysuckle Road. Happy Shopping!

Our weekend continued with a county fair, a parade and, might I add, a whack to the head with a flag stick when I stepped into the line of the color guard today. Happy St. Patrick's Day to ya.
More to come.

The yarn photo actually made my heart skip a little- definitely not boring for a knitter. I have a bracelet similar to that one- so pretty. Mine says "I don't shine if you don't shine" :) Rest well!

Love the pictures of Lainey holding the baby. You can just feel the love! We hit the beach this week although its not warm enough in Southern Ontario to enjoy a swim! The white sand in your pictures makes me want to hop on a plane to Florida!

Those shells were worth the trek, wow! And that was an especially lovely Friday Photo dump.

This has quite literally been the worst week of my life...hubs in the hospital with an aortic dissection, cancelled wedding plans, and just overall bad. But I know (I KNOW!) I can always come here and feel better...calmer, somehow. Your words & pictures are so soothing. I can almost envision the normalcy back in my life.

Erin said...

Your mama is beautiful as are you and your girlies! That beach looks like paradise, and this California girl wishes our beaches were as pretty and our sand as white as yours in Florida! :)

What lovely photos, I love the photos of the girls with the baby. Lainy looks like such a natural.( I am sure their will be a line for her babysitting services) I swear she acts in photos way to big for her age. Love it... Love the girls little curl ponytails and beach pictures are enough to make me plan a quick trip to Florida for a beach day.

Baby Ivy looks so perfect and she's so new. Oh how I love a new baby. I always struggle with getting things done when my folks come for a visit. It is all about memories, but the other to-do stuff has to get done too. Hard line.

I have all this to look forward too when my own mum visits from England in 2 weeks time. Looks like you're having fun! Am I correct in thinking you once wrote that George is from Long Island NY? Does that mean you will be visiting my next of the woods one day soon?

I wish I could go to the beach. It is still raining and snowing where I live. I have been to Sanibel Island before and the shells are amazing. I had the Sanibel stoop going on.

Oh so glad that you're exhausted from your stay-cation. Just like having a baby, these visits are worth the sleep deprivation. And your commentary about Lainey being bored, I was dragged endlessly to nurseries growing up; always asking, "Mom, what's that Plant? And that?" Now I can walk through a nursery and name pretty much all of the plants in zone 6 & 7. I love that dorky aftertaste from my experience with mom.

And speaking of sleep deprivation, I have to get back to slicing and dicing material for Alex's Easter dress. Why did I have to run out of Twizzlers now!

"But memories take work sometimes. Amazing takes work."
Oh Kelle, I'm so glad you wrote those words! Thank you for speaking my truth....coz I often wonder about how others perceive the making of memories & planning of their days/lives. Sometimes I do things with my family, and the preparations & planning & actual 'doing' require so much hard stinkin' work, that I even doubt "will it be worth it?". And then usually the hard work pays off & amazing times are had....memories are made!!! So...thankyou Kelle for clarifying that with me! I love you that you too....go to the effort {the big effort} to live BIG!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
xx
P.S. Lainey's mothering techniques with Baby Ivy....oh my! LOVE!

Every time I see a picture of you and your mom, I think "She has great genes, she is gonna be one hot older woman!" Not everyone has that luxury. Oh and I have been debating if I want to grey gracefully or fight it with hair dye. Your mom helps me realize that I can grey gracefully and still be hot. So grey gracefully it is!

Enjoy the baby.

Major beach envy here! Just spent our spring break week here at home & it rained EVERY day.... two high energy boys & the best baby in the world to keep occupied & entertained I had to pull out all my tricks. Puddle walks, forts, a gazzilion rounds of candyland & zingo, making pretzels & an aquarium trip... looking forward to school starting back on Monday. Whew! Hopefully there were some good memories made... I know my littles will be big too soon & won't want to do these things with their old mama anymore.

No---the fun's just beginning. That's along about the time that the flour-and-water relief maps of Brazil start to rear their heads.

Then the dioramas of Gettysburg, the kitchen volcanoes, the dowel-and-paper kites, and the screen-print art. Homemade paper comes along, and origami, and then all those choices for as many Science Fairs as you can stand.

And sports---you'll be hoarse and pumped from one season to the next.

Don't chill---you were made for greater things.

Amazing beach! And Lainey with baby, WOW! I love seeing pics of your Mom, with all of you. Yes, memories take work, and AMAZING does, for sure. And you always seem to pull it off! TO AC - So sorry about your hubby and that this was your worse week,as you said. Sending positive energy your way, as much as *I* can these days, at least. Not to hijack, but I'm having rough time since awful car crash several weeks ago. Still much healing needed and espcially emotionally, PTSD, lack of sleep. As you said, missing normalcy. I think that is so much part of my grief, my PTSD symptoms. Missing ME and my real Life and wonering how long will this all take? I have had a couple of bad weeks, these past two, just very depressed by it all. Hoping you feel more 'normal' real soon, and me, too! Our oldest dtr and hubby, baby finally came up to visit, first time since crash. That felt so good. Love from the Blog Mama~

Gorgeous as usual. So glad you are having a fab time with your mum. And George the unicycle pro!

The pictures of the girls with Ivy are too sweet. The sequence reminds me of a time a few years ago when we had a friend's daughter over to babysit for the first time. She was about 17 but looked quite a bit younger because she was very petite. My son was about 7/8 at the time and looked so anxious when he saw her. He called me aside and said "Are you sure she's old enough to look after us, mummy?" Little Ivy's furrowed brow in the first picture seems to say something similar. A couple of seconds later and she just KNOWS she's in a very safe pair of hands. Adorable trio x x Sarah in the Uk

Hope your heads ok. Had to supress a bit of a giggle I'm afraid at your description x

I love your words and pictures, and ordinarily feel only inspired and happy when I leave your blog. Today I have to admit to a bit of jealousy - winter is hanging on with typical dreary rain here in Vancouver, interspersed with a few teasing rays of sunshine here and there but only a hint of spring so far. We've all really had it with winter and are thirsty for some sun and warmth. Your summer clothes, beaches and sandcastles just sound divine right now, and I'm not even a "beachy" kind of girl.

And I can't wait to see what you do by third grade ... betcha you won't outgrow the competitive spirit where getting your girls that ribbon is concerned ;)

by third grade??.....no way !.....
if you're like me even just a little bit and i think you are, you'll be helping your kids even while they're in high school. it will a different kind of help, but you'll be there, full on, giving ideas and suggestions and even doing a bit of research for them while they're busy making whatever it is they're competing in...science fair, art class, home living.....anything, you'll be there until they refuse to let you near them. for my son, that was never. my daughter, by her freshman year she raised an eyebrow and said, "I've got this mom" and i backed away with a huge smile wrapped around my heart. i was so proud.
