An easy 134 miles separates our suburban town from the kaleidoscopic culture of South Miami Beach. It's silly I don't make the jaunt more often--perhaps because Brett likes South Beach in "itty bitty doses." I'm kind of more a drink-the-whole-cup-down girl. So I did. I drank up this city these last two days in a keg stand with no breaths and yes, that's a sloppy drinking metaphor for a cultural city that deserves more but, in this instance, it works.
South Beach is vibrant and loud and brilliantly marries purposeful and unintentional in a successful union. Women purposefully wear heels and body-hugging leopard print for simple excursions like fetching a Cuban sandwich up the street, and nobody rolls their eyes or assumes they're overdone. At the same time, anything goes--flip flops, frayed shorts, tacky t-shirts, done, undone, overdone. It really doesn't matter.
While Brett made jokes at every corner like "Hey Babe, take a picture of that"--pointing to a littered beer can, a dirty wadded napkin, a crumpled strip club brochure--I couldn't help but be fascinated by so much, and the gazillion photos I tried to narrow down attest to the glory that is South Beach. (I edited these with my laptop and the screen brightness is a little off, so sorry, these are a little too saturated and contrasted. But South Beach is a little over saturated and contrasted too.)
As always, assume with any high-on-life post that babies cried, we forgot diapers and, after I spilled half and half and it soaked in and roasted in the heat for two days, our car smelled like rancid nasty on the way home. Can it just be a given in any blue skies post that there could be an equal amount of photos of mildewed beach bags and unhappy kids in car seats? Good.
So, South Beach. Where were we?
It really was lovely and adventurous. The girls were too fascinated with colors and sounds and people to even think about complaining and while Brett worked during the day, we girls walked and walked and walked. And when buildings and shops started thinning out, we turned left, found another street and walked and walked and walked again.
Who needs a double stroller when you can pile your kids on top of each other?
Someone asked on Instagram, "Do you plan your trips or do you just stumble upon?" and I smiled and fell in love with that term--stumble upon. My whole life seems to be a bit of stumble upon and, while it doesn't work for everyone, I really like it that way.
We stumbled upon any street that looked inviting, any shop that looked unique, any street fountain that begged to be dipped in.

We met up with our dear friend Katie whose face was the very first my girls embraced when they were welcomed to this world.
She and Oliver accompanied our city adventures, and she introduced us to the most fabulous gelato on Lincoln Ave yesterday.
Bottom scoop Dulce de leche, top scoop coconut.
I have decided the Tree of Good and Evil was made of coconut gelato. This I can understand because I too would consider sending the fate of the world to hell in a hand basket if you told me I couldn't eat this.
Lainey chose a scoop of strawberry topped by kiwi.
...and Nella stole mine while I practiced motherly selflessness.
Lainey asked for one souvenir--a pool toy that shoots water. I obliged and we left the store with her gripping the cheap penguin water shooter and smiling. Two blocks later, we're passing a street fountain, I see that look in her eye, and I know exactly what she's thinking. And, because I didn't get that gene that tells you "this probably isn't a good idea," I smile and nudge her on. "Go ahead. You can." She smiles and looks at me, shocked I gave her permission. And somewhere between her loading her water gun from the street fountain and it shooting a geyser up the side of Bank of America, it dawns on me...maybe this is kind of rude.
So I say really loud so people hear me, "Babe, I don't think we should do that." And then I picked up three pieces of trash on the ground and threw them away because it made me feel better.
Favorites of the trip?
*Sun Flare on Crack.
It just seeps in between buildings, through palm fronds, grazing the sides of hotels and cafes and spilling golden light everywhere come early evening. And I was bananas trying to ladle it up. Liquid gold, Baby.

*Hidden Messages.
See that up in the trees? We almost missed it, but Katie spotted it dangling over our heads.
*Fancy Pet Stores.
Little dogs are accessories here. They frost the arms of the fashionably dressed, and consequently, fancy pet stores grace the streets. Where else do puppies sleep in pink shredded paper?
Nella and the little chiguagua had a moment.
We almost had a moment of childhood trauma after we left Lainey's puppy blanket at the pet store, unbeknownst to us. Thankfully, the nice man who works there ran--panting--past a block, three bums and thirty billion cigarette butts to bring it to us.
*Fly Boutique.
My favorite sweater I bought years ago is from this little vintage shop on Lincoln, and now we have to drop in every time we go to South Beach. It smells charmingly old--like vintage leather and clothes with stories, and it's dripping with treasures--old suitcases, interesting jewelry and hats, chandeliers, tapestry rugs, velvet couches. Dreamy.

*The Beach.
Sweet mother, the beach here is amazing.
Our beaches are lovely, but our mangroves leave the water looking brown. Here, it's a picturesque turquoise, contrasted beautifully by a few dispersed white caps and a backdrop of cerulean sky.
Nella's hat: La La Lee
The girls played for over an hour the other day, quietly entertaining themselves with a shovel, a pail, and a couple mangrove seeds that transform quite nicely into beach pencils.

I love life guard stations. I wish our beaches had them.

*Pink Caddys.
*South Beach Narcolept.
Nella slept everywhere. In strollers, on chairs, in slings, propped up, tipped over, hugged against my chest, the car seat, the pack n' play. Sister rolls with it.

*Sea Salt and Water Bottle.
This is a bottle of water and a little bowl of sea salt with a tiny spoon. It was sitting at our cafe table, and I have decided we shall take a bottle of water, a bowl of sea salt and a tiny spoon with us wherever we go when we'd like children to be happy and entertained.
*Street Misters.
When you're pushing the stroller, wiping your brow, repositioning the baby who's slipping on your sweaty hip, it comes just at the right time. Ahhhh.
*Flamenco in the Night.
Perhaps my favorite moment of the two days. Late night dinner on Ocean Drive, oil lamps, Italian food, full moon, babies up past their bedtime, Gypsy King cover songs, Flamenco shoes pounding, ruffled skirts swishing, hands twirling and clapping. It was delicious.

And this picture makes me laugh. Brett was attempting a cool shot of Nella and me peering between a plate rack, and I'm assuming the focus on the enthusiastic dancer in the background was accidental. Right?
So yes, we stumbled upon, and it was good.

The harvest moon delivered...South Beach style.

going back to read, but love the photos already:)
What beautiful pictures! And those candy corn dresses are adorable!!! My Cecilia would flip out.
I want to just go and visit cool places.....your pictures are always so fun to look at. Love the candy corn dresses.....so cute and fun!!
Long time reader, first time comm enter (and fellow Michigander). The candy corn dress is so cute!!!
You are adorable! ALL of you! Ok...fess up...do you like the lifeguard stands or the people they house :) xoxoxo
I would give up crisp, Fall days for that! Says she as the sun is streaming in the window kidding me into believing it is actually warm outside and I don't need shoes!
i love how you focus on the good. Yes, everytrip with kids could probably be turned into a horror story, just depends on the way it is spinned. And why not spin it well??
Sweet scenes. Lovely ladies. Joyous jaunt. Routines just need to be shattered sometimes. When life becomes predictable, you need to leave the corridor and stumble upon another route. Glad you enjoyed your stumble in Miami.

I thought for a second I would be the first comment...no such luck. But I am a first-time commenter. I love your blog and love the candy-corn dresses.
I need to go there! I have never been, but you make it look so inviting!!
I know you have a life like the rest of us...but YOU HAVE THE COOLEST LIFE!!! Always "enjoying the small things"...a great reminder for all of us!
I like your disclaimer : ) Isn't necessary in my opinion, but helps me to identify and remember that even when there are the challenges, focusing on the positives is a much happier way of life.
The Happy Camper clothes look fun!
Looks like your family had fun!! I look forward to the many memories our family will make as we travel! My husband laughs at me as I take pictures of different things!!
I adore those candy corn dresses! On two of my favorite girls!
LOVE the pink caddy pic! I want one!!
What a fun packed couple of days you had. I would love to see the turquoise ocean in South Beach one day. Our oceans are beautiful but such a different color and not inviting at all. I guess if you are a surfer....or if you head to the south, but we always end up in Monterey. Have a great weekend!
I need to be there. I need deliverance like asap. I don't care where it is, just land me there and take all my worries away... your children are adorable and I'm sooo diggin laniey and the pink caddy.. now that delivers!
I love Nella's beach hat!! Beautiful pictures!
LOVE Nella's blue sun hat with the big white flower! The pic of her in that hat, with your ice cream cone, is awesome!!! Looks like you guys had an awesome time! So many great pictures of what look like some amazing memories...but thanks for letting us know it wasn't all fountains and gelato, sometimes the pics make it seem like a totally blissful fairytale....
Life is all about stumbling...it's about getting back up the keeps you going. Keep on stumblin ;)
Beautiful, yet again!
looks like a lovely time had by all. love nella sleeping in all the different spots; too, too cute!
I am digging the South Beach warmth through your pictures. In the Pacific Northwest where fall is upon us, it's a glimpse into another dimension of the country. AND I am digging the candy corn dress for my sweet Georgia who has pumpkin patch pictures scheduled and is screaming for a theme outfit such as this.
I have a little chichi that looked just like Nella's little friend when he was a pup.....That pic made me have to pull his old puppy pics lol
Happy Camper, happy camper!
Love all your photos. Your mini vacation looked to be amazing! I love your skirt in the last photo of you and Nella
Confession: I love your blog and read it religiously, but this comment is hoping for a candy corn dress!
I have never left a comment before, so this is new for me. But I just wanted to tell you that you inspire me. Your blog is the first thing I do every day, in those quiet moments before my little man wakes. Your words have given me strength on the really hard days, to squeeze and kiss my son more no matter how tired or cranky he might be. So, from the bottom of my heart, and with the risk of being a little creepy, thank you for helping me see the mother I would like to be.
The plan for today, to stumble upon.
-Lyndsey
p.s. your girls are beautiful, and special, and I love getting to know you all through your pictures and blogging.
I absolutely love the way you stuble upon! Your girls are so beautiful! Thanks for sharing them with us!
and I clearly can't type **Stumble
How I envy those beautiful blue waters. Up here in Washington we have pebble beaches and frigid water. Oh, to dip my toes in the warm gulf water. Sigh..... I love all of the pictures you have of the girls. They are wonderful!
Laura
I think you should do a series on Nella sleeping--like the current Facebook "planking" craze or those little flat people to take with you on vacation and take pictures of them everywhere. Get Nella sleeping in a hundred different cool places--yes, make a book about it! Poppa will buy it!
--Poppa
My favorite pics from this post: any photo with Nella and her HAT! It's a little, um, Mary Poppins-ish??? SO love it :)
I despise candy-corn, but would eat my girl up in one of those dresses!!!
Oh, and Lainey squirting Bank of America.....LOVE that you let her do that! Which reminds me of my favorite quote from here: "So I say really loud so people hear me, "Babe, I don't think we should do that." And then I picked up three pieces of trash on the ground and threw them away because it made me feel better." Hahahahahaha!!!! I'll bet we can ALL remember a time (or 2 or 3) that we've done that! SO funny, you!
And now I need some coconut gelato....you already have me hooked on Haugendaus (sp?) 5 Lemon! The coffee flavored is another favorite :)
Have a blessed day,
Kelly
Your trips always look so fun! As a former FL girl myself, your beach baby photos always make me super homesick! One day I will sit on the beach with both of my babies, and it will be worth the wait. Love the candy corn dress!
OH my stumble upon, that is so my life. I love it.
I also adore the candy corn dresses I have a few little girls they would be perfect on for fall photos.
I love autumn, but seeing pictures of your kids at the beach makes me wish we lived somewhere warmer. Your photos are fabulous!
These shots are beautiful...especially the beach photos. What a fun trip!
And the candy corn dresses...too cute!
love your blog! reading about forgetting lainey's blanket reminded me of a great book for kids (you may have it already) - Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems - one of my kids' favourites - a must read for sure. :)
*Haagen Dazs :)
ahhhhhhhhhhhhh south beach. love. love your "stumble upon" mentality. easy breezy. glad you all had a lovely time. i ADORE the photo of you holding Nella with the sun flare. what can i say, i'm a sun flare whore. :) and especially love all of the beach pics.
rock on.
oh how I wish my little one would sleep anywhere.... that would make life so much easier! Looks like a fantastic trip!
Those sweet pics of Nella sleeping are my fav of all time!
So much to love in this post! The pictures are to die for. Laughing out loud at the last minute decision to let everyone know you’re a responsible mom with stopping Lainey and her squirt gun and then picking up some trash. But my favorite part was the picture of the Flamenco dancer. Hilarious! And I agree with Poppa. I’d buy a “Nella sleeps in random places” book! Love you! xo
I like poppa's idea about nell a sleeping...she has THE cutest sleeping pictures. Also, that picture of Lainey in the beaches section looks so cool. the one where she has her hand just so and the bird is to her left, it looks like she threw the bird. lol
Once again..I love your posts, your pictures, your words, your littles, YOU...amazing. Keep on chugging. I can't wait to have more "stumble upon" adventures as I continue to heal. :D
Thanks for all the ideas, and YES those beaches look absolutely AMAZING! :D
how adorable are those dresses! your trip looked like massive amounts of fun!
Kelle...I LOVE this post. I read it at least five times, and literally laughed out loud each time I read about the enthusiastic dancer. Cheers to the weekend. Hope you have a happy one :D
-Whitney
Those dresses are too cute! Your photos are amazing, as always. I love reading about your adventures.
I spent my first 30 years in West Palm Beach, FL. I left 6 years ago and never looked back. Until I "stumbled upon" your blog. When I'm not crying at the tenderness of your words, grinning at the pictures of your babes, or wishing I was you, I am seeing Florida for the first time. How was I so blind to its beauty?
Your posts make me smile. I look forward to reading them everyday! Thank you for letting us all share a look into a window of your life.
lovely! I've got to go work on some sun flare photos of my little one before our warm weather is completely gone...
How absolutely delectable! Especially that Nella!
I so wish I could stumble upon South Beach. (sigh) some day.
It's funny...I saw the picture of Lainey carrying her blanket and thought "how do they travel around with so many stops and not leave that anywhere?" Then I read further...lol
I'm so glad it ended up in her possession again!
How much fun. I live in Montana and we don't really have a lot of vintage shops here but when we travel I will be looking. The pictures are fabulous as usual.
South Beach looks so wonderful, pretty beaches. I just love how you do all the family stuff together. ** To: SoakingUp the HappyLife - maybe you arent awful far from me, or there is another Monterey? I am not too far from Monterey, CA - in Soquel, near Capitola. ?? Love from the Blog Mama
I LOVE candy corn!! Those dresses are so cute and such a neat idea!! :)
Absolutely GORGEOUS post! Love this photos! The sun flare is so dreamy. Your girls are absolutely adorable! Love, love, love this. :)
♥ Kailyn
I have never been to Florida and reading all you posts really makes me want to visit more and more. I love to take my 3 kids and Stumble Upon cute little shops, my favorite so far is the cute little Chocolate Shoppe we found in a town about 15 minutes away. They specialize in Chocolate dipped Bacon!
I had to giggle when you mentioned picking up trash to feel better. How many times have I put things back on the shelf, etc. mid tantrum, just so people around me know that -- despite my screaming todder -- we are truly model citizens? :-)
I've never been, but all of the colors are calling me to this little corner of the world! And the candy corn dress are fabulous!
"So I say really loud so people hear me, "Babe, I don't think we should do that." And then I picked up three pieces of trash on the ground and threw them away because it made me feel better." LMFAO!
Gorgeous pics (as always!)
AMAZING pictures! Thank you for sharing your trip with us! :)
No feet??? I didn't see your feet. I must go back and look.
I think I need to stumble upon a little more. Looks like an amazing trip. :)
Love the photos! So much fun in two days!!! And you seem/sound fully charged with creative energy. :)
Will love to win a candy corn dress :)
Happy Almost Friday!!!!!!
XOXO
I've only been to South Beach once - in my younger/single days - you took me back there with these photos! Love!
LOVE the candy corn dresses! And of course, as always, the awesome photos! Thanks for adding to today's smiles, Kelle~
Wow. We should totally make our way to South Beach! Looks lovely!
Beautiful trip. The sand on Nella at the beach almost reminded me of my Bean covered in cinnamon and sugar this morning from the apples I put the mixture on for her. Except it's not sunny and warm here, it's barely touched 60 degrees yet. I love taking "last horrah" trips before the cool down that is Autumn in Indiana. Our next big trips will be to the apple orchards for cider and wagon rides, and then the covered bridge festival in October, both of which I'm very excited for. :)
So I am officially ready to pack up my family and move to Florida.... like yesterday!!! Its just so beautiful!! Your short trip looks like soooo much fun! I love the keep smiling hidden message... so cool!
I am experiencing my beach time this year through your posts! keep em coming ;) the candy corn dresses could not be cuter! I think i might need to get two for my pumpkins this year!
that photo of nella in the yellow swimsuit with sunglasses on is one of the sweetest ever. happy happy happy :)
Oh how I love Miami! Unfortunately, it's not a road trip from our spot in NYC.
Kelle it look like such a fun trip! x
What a Cadillac! I hope one day those streets will see my feet either!
You know, there's a stumble upon website that's pretty rad too.
looks awesome! we are heading to lake michigan for our first official family vacation in a couple of days...new plans for the trip: Stumble Upon!
Thanks ;)
Are Lainey's paints tight rolled in the picture with the pink caddy? Love it!
Thanks for making me feeling better about myself by admitting that despite all of your life's "unicorns and rainbows", you too experience whiny kids, stinky cars, and moments of blah. But thanks even more for showing me that you deliberately choose to celebrate the unicorn and minimize the not so unicorny times. Your rainbows are much more colorful and vivid because of it. Ok, all metaphors aside, thanks for your inspiring positivity!
It's hard to think of Halloween already...it seems we just started Sept but today is the 15th! seeing the candy corn dresses makes you want to nibble on the girls :o) with hugs and kisses.
Oh, and:
1. love the new sponsor - super cute dresses
2. coconut ice cream - you need to come visit me: Graeter's ice cream has coconut with giant dark chocolate heaven swirled in...talk about risking the fate of the world...
3. Brett's photo made me laugh! Surely his focus was an accident...just don't ask Freud ;)
Beautiful photos! Nella is so sweet that she'll sleep anywhere! XOXO
Loved this post! I went to south beach for work one time and ended up at a nude beach-ha! Dont know how that happened and the pharmaceutical sales industry would not have condoned it :) When I read "sun flare on crack"...I thought "kelle did not photograph someones crack" and then I scrolled down, realized what you meant, and felt like I was kinda creepy for thinking that! the pic brett took of the dancer was hilarious "honey I dont know why you and our baby are blurry I was looking at you the whole time." The pic of nella in the chair is beautiful! fun fun south beach!
Awwww South Beach, how I miss thee.
So fun and exciting.
I love all the vibrant colors and the vibrant people.
Awww! Sleeping Nella is just adorable, well she always is actually. Such great pictures once again!
My South Beach experiences weren't so expansive....somehow we ended up there during Spring Break!!! And when you are 47, Spring Break isn't really the atmosphere you are looking for! :)
Love the Candy Corn dresses....and we have a sweet 6 year old who would look adorable in it. :)
Cheers to new experiences and great times with family. I love taking the kids to explore new places. What a fun little getaway!
I love the pet store photos! I love the Candy Corn dresses! The girls look so cute in them. :)
The picture of Nella all sandy with the blue hat is precious! Looks like a wonderful trip! I truly envy your positive outlook on life. I liked your disclaimer :) Oh, how I would love to be on that beach or eating a cuban sandwich! yummmmmmmm!!
Those dresses are awesome! My lil girl will be a 1 year on Halloween shes as sweet as candy corn!!!
Trip seemed amazing! Going there in January can't wait!
I love seeing Nella in that navy striped one piece. I remember seeing Lainey in it as well. My daughter had that same outfit. I hope one day to have a little sister for her to put in it. Also love the candy corn dresses. My little guys birthday is Halloween so we can never get enough around here!
My first official comment, although I've been a faithful reader for months & months! Your girls are too cute for words! I thank you for letting an Iowa girl like me live vicariously through your South Florida vacationing!
Happy Almost Friday!!
Your trip looks like it was amazing. What awesome pictures! I love that Nella will sleep anywhere! I need to work on that one with Arya.
Liquid gold baby, I love it! :)
I love the watergun picture!! I wish I was that mom... I need to loosen up a bit. :)
Your photos are amazing as always! And I would hope the focus on the dancer was an accident ;)
My fav photo is Nella in her yellow swimsuit and matching sunglasses, too cute for words!!
I always love your posts, but this one I especially loved. It was a mini-vacation right here in my living room- love the gorgeous photos! The pic of Nella from the side with the big flower on her hat is really fabulous, and I love the ones of her sleeping plus the one Brett took is hilarious. Thanks for this today! And I love the candy corn dresses- such a great idea!
to read your blogs (for me) w/out a doubt always comes w/ loud out bursting gut laughs...you are so funny and I love how you describe things..I laughed so hard about how you nudged Lainey to go play w/ her new water squirting toy in the fountain then tell her (so others can hear) that you don't think it's a good idea to do that...then pick up 3 pieces of trash because it made you feel better.....that's GREAT!!! I love it....I love how you pass on your free spirit unto your kids! You Kelle are brilliant!
ok, now I NEED to go to South Beach! Thanks, Kelle :)
It's amazing how fast Nella seems to be growing up from post to post. She's beautiful! Both your girls are.
What is it about children who can sleep anywhere? Wish my little ones had that talent! I think the Nella-sleeping pictures are my faves!
I used to drive my whole college baseball team to South Beach while we were in FL for Spring Break...brings back memories!
LOVE your blog and the adorable candy corn dresses!
I love reading your posts! Once the kids are down for a nap and momma gets a break, you deliver the perfect escape for me every time and remind me what it's all about... thank you!
I loved hearing about your trip...but OH,My,Word, those candy corn dresses are superbly adorable!
I love this post. It was exactly what I needed to read on my study break. It's perfectly fall here in Northwest Ohio. I'll drink a pumpkin spice latte for your midwestern heart :)
I love that you stumble upon all of your fun adventures with your kids. I adore your courage to just go with it. I need to be more daring in this area. My kids are on such a strict routine with the school year having started. As always, love the pictures. The beach is beautiful!!
Amazing pics & blog post as usual. :-) Looks like you & the family had a great time. I really enjoy your blog.
I long for Florida - want to trade places with a Northern girl for a week in say... March? ;)
Your beautiful little girls looked like they enjoyed their mini vacation. They look so cute in their candy corn dresses.
Stumble upon. Yes, that describes my life just about perfectly. Nothing as planned, not even what I thought it might be. But what I've stumbled upon seems just perfect to me.
I may just adopt that phrase as well :)
now I want to go to south beach. love the water sprayer story. I have so done stuff like that
Traveling on vacation with you has got to be a blast!! You always seem to have such an enjoyable time....looks like a wonderful couple of days!
LOVING Happy Camper stuff! I hope I win!
The beach looks amazing. I would love to visit there sometime. I have heard it is quite the experience. As always your pictures bring it to life for the rest of us.
What a great trip! I sooo want to go to South Beach someday and then rent a convertible and drive to Key West. Dream Vaca-those beach pics were amazing!
Great photos from your trip (as always). Poor Nella- y'all wore that poor baby out!

Loves da candycorn. Nom nom nom> :)
Oh how I long to live in (or just close to!)To paradise! So lovely!
The picture of Nella asleep in the chair, with her little belly peeking out, made me gasp and smile. Pure sweetness! (I have two grandbabies just about her age, so I am so there in my heart with your babygirl)
fun and beautiful!
Dear Kelle,
The photos are beautiful, vacation looks great! However, I think you're forgetting a photo of YOU in your clingy animal print and heels?
Have a great weekend!
Megan
I love your account of all of the adventures (big and small) that you stumbled upon.
I also thought that you should know that because of your blog I have found my new passion of photography. A year or so I was feeling out of sorts, even though I was so happy to be mom to my little girl. I knew that I need a passion in addition to my love of my family. Then I found your blog and fell in love with your family through your photos and your writing. I was so inspired to learn what I could about photography so that I could give my own children the same gift (of beautiful photographs of their childhood). Since then my husband has bought me a camera, a few lenses, Mamarazzi, and a subscription to an online photography forum. I'm taking pictures like my life depends on it. I'm delving into this new adventure, and I really have you to thank! Thank you for inspiring me!
Love the beach shots! Adorable little girls..Loving the candy corn dresses
Sometimes I just want to dive into your posts and break the surface into the world you live in! Thanks for taking me out of the midwest from time to time on a sweet journey!
Love the candy corn dresses!
Beautiful pictures..That beach looks amazing. What a great fall getway for you guys. I like your version of "stumble upon".
I really want to go on vacation with you. Amazing!
Love Nella and Lainey in their sunglasses, soaking up Miami.
It sounds and looks like a phenomenal place, so happy you enjoyed yourself.
so fun! love family jaunts!
Makes me want to go to Miami someday. Of course, I would just sing the old Will Smith song "Welcome to Miami" the whole time. I admire how you are so adventurous with your girls. I just dont know how you can walk so much with 2 littles. I dont think it would go so well for us!
Thanks for the reminder to take our time. What a lovely trip!
Love your pics! I'm off to stumble upon my own adventure today....
The pics are amazing. Being from the north, it is always neat to see how warm and sunny it always looks down there :) And I would have to agree that the candy corn dresses are the cutest! Perfect for Halloween and welcoming fall...
your water fountain adventure made me laugh. thanks... :)
Once this baby in my belly comes out (in a couple weeks) I think we need more stumble upon moments for sure! I'm far too much of a planner for my own good.
Looks like so much fun! That water!! Thanks for sharing!
Our greatest days are stumbled upon. I always thought I was a planner, but ever since kids, you'd have never known it and friends look at me shocked when I say I used to plan. We fly by the seat of our pants and it's fun!
Love how Nella sleeps anywhere...I think I could do that, but not my kids.
Susan
I have moments and places that I like to Stumble Upon and others where I am hands down a planner. Looks like Nella can just Stumble Upon a good napping spot.
Looks like loads of fun! How do you seem to do so well with littles up past their bedtime? My little dude just hits a wall come 7:30pm, and I feel like we'll never be able to have fun past-bedtime adventures!
Under "The Beach," 4th picture down, is a simple, sweet, encapsulating of summer picture...Nella's hat and Lainey's sunglasses complete "the look." Thanks for sharing! E
Personally, I think the water shooter was a brilliant idea. And I would have also given permission.
Reminds me of the thing in Pinterest I saw. Something about no matter how big and bad you think you are, a small child hands you a fake phone, you answer it. That to me says the day should never be so serious that you can't squirt random strangers on the street. ;-D
I want to go to South Beach!!!
Oh Kelle - these are amazing pictures. The beach shots are amazing. wow wow wow! xo
Your skirt (alright, the entire outfit) in the last pictures is beautiful! I'm glad you guys had an awesome few days away from home - I wish my son slept like Nella. :)
It looks like you had a great trip!
My uncle lives in south beach! I love visiting him and recognized many of the places in your pictures. And surprisingly, Naples was once on our short list of places to live. We were one accepted teaching/coaching position away from moving there :-) small world.
My brother just moved to Florida for college. Hope he has as much fun as you!
We love South Beach....we try to visit often especially since we live so close...:)
Is the sand at that beautiful beach the kind that is soft and melts between your toes? Or is it the grainy kind? Whenever we visit my husband's family in Florida we can never find the soft sand!
Those dresses look adorable on the girls! Looks like you had a great time too!
Great pic's. You're inspired me to get out more. Seriously!
I am commenting because I want to say I LOVE LANIEY's SHOES! Danskos are the way to go.... <3 clogs.
Aw man, I love South Beach! Looks fun and it's making me need to plan our used-to-be annual trip down there in February. Maybe this time we'll bring the little ones :)
Those dresses are adorable!
I am going to South Beach for the first time ever at the end of the month! Very excited now that I've had a preview.
The pic of Nella eating your ice cream cone...she looks sooo much like Lainey!
You always take the coolest adventures!! I can't get my husband off the couch where his iPad is glued to his hands. The flood around here really took it's toll. Jobs lost, houses lost, people are just going through the motions and it's just a mess and smells bad. Watching your adventures takes me away for just a few minutes. Thank you! followtheknapps.com
Looks amazing! But, hey, you make everything look amazing!
I "stumbled" upon your blog from a Hallmark post and I LOVE it!
Looks like a fun stumble! My favourite picture is the one of the Nella asleep in the fancy chair with her little belly poking out. And the ones with the lifeguard huts on the beach are a close second :)
once again, thank you for sharing your beautiful life (and family) with us! that close up photo of Nella needs to go on a canvas STAT! gorgeous!!
Dear Kelle, this is your official invite to come to Seattle. I desperately how you will shoot my city....it's beautiful and moody and colorful and natural...but there is no sun. No liquid gold. When there is sun, on those rare days, you can see 360 mountains and the huge volcano of Rainier in its glaciated glory. But mostly, you can just see clouds. Still, I gotta see my city from your lens and your eye. I'm gonna bookmark this bright vibrant contrasted saturated post and fuel up on sun when it starts to get REAL dreary here.
love

OMG. The scene with the water squirter would totally have been me too. Let 'em do it. Whoops. Maybe not the best idea. Make up somehow for it afterwards. Love that I'm not alone on that! As always thanks for your sharing your life's outlook :)
As always, your littles are adorable, pictures wonderful, quips amusing!
You always make me smile! Ya know, I think there was something you missed in a pic. Its of Lainey standing up at the beach, life guard tower behind her, Nella next to her doing some serious sand digging. If you look closely the way Laineys hand is and look over her left shoulder there is a bird looking like it was flung right out of that little hand. Yea, I always look close at pics...just love the details in them!
Thanks for being you!
Looking at your pictures makes me want to go on vacation!!! LOVE the candy corn dresses! :)
My 4 year old and I just perused every photo. It was very fun to see it all through her eyes. Oh, and she loves the pictures of Lainey and Nella the best; she said, "maybe I can play with them sometime." ;-)
Booootifull fun!
The blue dress hanging on the mannequin in the vintage store with the gold necklace? Looks like you. Love it! And lovin' the contrast in these photos. That beach and all that you capture is sublime. Just delicious.
I am a fellow Michigander and I teach all day. I love taking a few minutes out of my lunch or planning time...or sometimes a few minutes with a glass of wine at night to read your posts and ooh and aah over your pictures. The positive outlook you have is both inspiring and contagious. And those dresses...those dresses are just.plain.adorable!!!
Your posts are such a treat! What lens do you prefer to use on your adventures with kids in tow? I'd like to bring my camera along more often but find I don't like lugging extra bulk...south beach photos are gorgeous! Those skies!!
My 19 month old identifies all the pictures of Nella as either "Ez-a" or "Jon-than" or "weeell(Will)". all small-ish people must be labeled to match one of the small-ish people that he knows. I won't bother to correct him - bless him, his world is still sweet and small.
What a post woman! Love the photos and esp the ones of the sun peeping through...the expressions on your girls faces are also priceless...as well as your hubby's attempt for a cool shot! That made me laugh out loud too:). My life with 4 kids and trying to adopt 2 more makes me "stumble upon" many things too - I use to think everything had to be "so so" and "perfect" but I am learning to give myself grace these days and to just enjoy life...to enjoy my husband & kids...and to just let go and be a kid at times too! Icecream, watercolor painting in the park, sidewalk chalk, tutus, dancing and singing LOUDLY with my older girls, and slowing dancing in the rain with my hubby - again, stumbled upon bliss! Your blog rocks! xo
the girls with the puppies? that is almost not even fair! adorable.
love your skirt in the last pics!!!
beautiful pictures.
but what's new?
I have a weakness for candy corn and when I saw my local Target stocked in on their shelves last night (after just going for milk)-- I of course had to pick some up. Those dresses are adorable. I would love to win one =]
I seriously love your blog! :) What a great trip and it's those stumble upon things in life that make it worth living, I think. :)
unpacking...sigh..the worst part of any trip! Such a wonderful adventure, thanks so much for sharing..as always :) And I love your outfit in those last few pics!
I "stumbled upon" your blog some time ago and am hooked! Love reading about your plentiful adventures!
Cute dresses!
My favorite picture? Nella curled up in the chair, sound asleep, with her belly button peeking out.
And your long skirt - love it!
Love the candy corn dresses! I need to see my tiny girl in one! (:
Wow - I can see, hear and smell the flamenco restaurant just through your pictures. AWESOME post!
Wonderful life you have. I love your outlook and happiness and optimism. Keep it up :)
I love all the life in your pictures. The one picture of Lainey on the beach rocking the glasses, looks like she just threw that bird in the air lol. Great shot!
You have the best trips!
Your blog never ceases to amaze me. I just loved those red high heels that Lainy tried on
I shall steal "stumble upon". I love it! I'm learning to love these kind of adventures. My insticts say to plan, plan, plan. But plans can disappoint, but to stumble upon always delivers. You and your girls inspire me.
I've always wanted to go to South Beach!! Thanks for giving me some of it today!! Those shots of Nella sleeping are so adorable and that little vintage shop on lincoln looks amazing!! Thanks for the mini escape on this cool but sunny Michigan day!!
Tina...Zeeland, Michigan
as always, beautiful pictures! I have to admit, I hate to eat candy corns, but I love them on kids clothing. Yay for Halloween being so close!
I love reading about your adventures. It is a really nice break in the work day and takes me to another world for a bit. When I am having a ho-hum day I can always come here and leave smiling.
Stumbled upon! What an absolutely beautiful way to live life.
Beautful pictures - as always. Makes me wish I was in South Beach right now! Love reading your blog - it's always a little pick-me-up in my day. Don't know why, but was re-reading your blog from 2/1, "Shaken", and couldn't stop thinking about your friend who lost her eight yr old son. It's now six-months later and I am hoping she and her family are doing OK. The pain of that kind of loss never truly heals, but I hope they are finding their way through a new kind of normal and that they can find some peace. If you talk to her, tell her that someone she never met in Kuna, Idaho thinks of her and prays for her often.
What a fun trip!
love this post! love beach pics; love nella & lainey pics; love Katie's love shirt; love, love, love coconut gelato; love stumbling through life & ending up in amazing places. did I say I love this post?

Unknown,
Thank you for those kind words for my friend. I saw her a few months ago as she and her family came to stay at one of my dad's places. I suppose the words "doing well" don't ever seem applicable any more, but she and her family are finding strength in family and friends and their faith. I too think of her so often.
The candy corn clothes are adorable! Although they did make me a little bit hungry and craving sweets :)
Love to read your posts and your girls are gorgeous!
