Twelve years ago, right about now, I was home from college, probably cruising I-69 in my teal Ford Escort wagon, on my way to Courtland Center to blow some babysitting money at American Eagle, the back-up store for girls who drove station wagons and couldn't afford Abercrombie. I'm sure I was irresponsibly french-braiding my hair in the rear view mirror while I drove, steering with my knee and listening to this song, perhaps the greatest summer anthem ever. If white boys could rap, then certainly a twenty-year-old jamming out in a station wagon with a duct-taped fender could be cool. To this day, that song makes me feel about twenty years old. And pumped for summer.
And who knew boogaloo shrimp and pogo sticks could dwell so harmoniously together in lyrics?

You know those flea markets you hear of where fabulous eccentric people gather early in the morning scouring booths for vintage treasures and actually find them? The ones stocked with cool vendors selling fresh-cut flowers, Polish pastries, first edition books with worn pages and hand-made art?
Yeah, that's not ours.

Our local flea market isn't so much a congregation of artists selling unique crafts but more a random collection of booths featuring knock-off sunglasses; tapestries of dogs playing poker or Jesus shaking hands with Elvis; 10-year-old Avon makeup stored in its original packaging, the cakey aged powder disguised with neon stickers that say "$2, never used." However, among the turquoise bolo ties and $5 Wolex watches, there are great things about our flea market. Like its catchy TV commercial that has me singing "Flamingo Island, Gonna get you smilin'" all damn day. Or the hot mini donuts rolled in cinnamon sugar that you can pick up from the carnival stand at the front entrance on Saturday morning. Or the fact that sometimes, if you look hard enough, you can actually find cool stuff.
This week, accompanied by my girls, I set out early Saturday morning to the flea market and came home a couple hours later with a rhinestone bedazzled initial bracelet for Lainey, a pair of Minnetonkas to match my girl's for me and this totally badass vintage knitting bag which I'll use as a purse come fall.
Turns out, our flea market isn't so bad after all.
********
The brides of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers had high expectations for this month. According to those petticoat wearing pretty girls, if you marry in June, you're a bride all your life. Since falling in love with that movie back when I was a musical-obsessed kid (and forbidden to watch anything outside the wholesome realm of Shirley Temple, Jimmy Stewart and Disney movies featuring Kurt Russel as a child), I have utmost respect for this mid-year month, and I vow never to let June down.
June is a great month for pigtails.

...and Sundays at our favorite place.
Note to Rebecca: Facebook profile pic?
See, I wasn't kidding about the synchronized swimming.
The grandest get-togethers we've ever pulled off are always spontaneous. A few "Isle of Capri tomorrow, hope you can come" texts fired off late Saturday night and the satisfaction the next morning with an applaudable response. Not that we don't love quieter beach Sundays when the footprints of just our family imprint the sand, but there is truth to "the more, the merrier," especially when more refers to pint-sized friends.
The kids earned their spa therapist licenses after practicing their mud bath massage techniques all at once on our friend, Andrea, who happens to be a really great sport.

Low tide makes for an enchanting beach that yes, involves mud, but also a vast collection of reflective pools, each its own miniature lagoon yielding hiding spots for unusual sea creatures and a playground for both bigs and littles.

Jellyfish, no sting.
Itty bitty crab.

Nella's super soft t-shirt, Tea Collection.

And here's where I insert the obligatory blog explanation that this kayak was floating on 4 inches of water about a foot away from the beach. No lifejackets, no danger.
Brett's not crazy about the new dock because he says it blocks a clear view of the bay, but I am loving the change of scene, a new point of interest for photos and another place for adventures.

It's all good.

And my Junebugs are happy.

My favorite pics from the day?

This little girl walked the beach with Lainey and was being so sweet to my girls. I asked her if I could take a picture of her hair beads because they were so pretty.
Oh, and I can almost say I swam with dolphins. One glided up next to our kayak while we were out in the deep, looped closely underneath it, and playfully swam back toward us. I was so excited, without even thinking, I jumped ship, treading water, gripping my life vest and calling for my friend to come back, like it was the family dog. I felt something smooth glide under my foot and, while I have no idea if it was a dophin, a fish or a clump of sea weed, I'm going with dolphin because this story isn't very good without that spectacular conclusion.
So there. A taste of our weekend. Now if only I still had my station wagon, I could pick up some Slurpees and drive into the sunset on this fine Monday. Rolling down my windows (manually, of course), letting my hair blow in the salty sea breeze and singing along to LFO.
I think it's fly when girls stop by for the summer...for the summer.
Finally, I'm excited to introduce a brand new sponsor, Just Ducky.
Featuring quality-made children's clothes in a variety of colorful fabrics, Just Ducky offers beautiful products that are great for matching or coordinating sibling looks (Lainey loves when she and Nella match). They also feature home shows, the perfect opportunity for you to customize and design your own look. Become a host or consultant here, find a show near you or shop online.
A commenter from this post will be randomly selected to win a $25 gift certificate for Just Ducky. Tell me, though, what are three things on your must-do summer list this year?
In the meantime, have a great week!

My To-Do List For Summer:
1) Throw my little one the finest "picnic at the park" themed birthday party in July.
2) In the same week, throw myself my own kick-ass 30th Birthday party which will pay tribute to my babies of the 80's roots. There will be leg warmers, roller skating, and yes...rockin' good 80's music. The kind that would make Cyndi Lauper proud, and perhaps even jealous.
3) Enjoy our first ever "night away" from our little girl, as we take a trip up the coast to a quaint little bed 'n breakfast. It'll be a big step for us, but it's time. :)

Top three for this summer:

Great pictures! Wish we lived closer to water.
Things to do this summer:
1. Take our daughter to the gardens in which we were married 7 years ago this July.
2. Watch our daughter learn to swim.
3. Potty train our daughter...hopefully this doesn't take all summer.
Mwah. That's all. Just. MWAH.
PS I think that last pic just made my week. Your images feed the soul somehow. You inspire me, a long time devourer of all things visual. When I worked as an art director, I was never so happy as I was when working with a photographer in a studio or when I was crouched over a light box (showing my age) sifting through a metric ton of slides looking for my money shots. Your blog is like that. A feast. Thank you.
My top three must-dos for the summer - camping, weddings, and starting my life after graduating college!
Our family tradition of blueberry picking is always a must. Maybe we'll still fit strawberry picking somewhere. And this summer I must have a weekend getaway with my husband even if for a day to go on an architectural tour of Chicago.
That and many days in the back yard just relaxing.
1. do nothing, and everything all at once. Not on a schedule, just go with it.
2. zoo, again and again.
3. ice cream shoppe. I love it when it is spelled like that.
I loved your post today. I am a June bride and I guess that means I have to live the whole month to its fullest!
My summer plans:
take advantage of the summer things I usually forget are so special. Swims in our own pool, ice cream trucks that stop outside our house, the splash park a couple of miles away.
Paint my girls toe nails. I did it once and they both LOVED it. And it so screams summer.
Evening motorcycle rides on the back of husband's bike. a past time we enjoyed often before kids but lately, not so often. My first ride in 4 years was on our 4 year wedding anniversary and it was wonderful!!!
1. Working out with my teenage son. We are both getting stronger and spending time together.
2. Dinner on the lake. I hear they have a beach for the kids to play on. Sounds like fun.
3. Lemonade stand with my daughter - every kid should have one. I remember taking my earnings (like $2) and buying candy. Great memories I hope to pass along.
Love Nella's pigtails!
My summer list includes going to the Distillery District in Toronto for a date day with the hubby, quitting my job to stay home with the kiddies :) and going on a road trip with my family.
I love Lainey's "O" face! 3 things on my summer "Must Do List" 1.Take the boys (5, 3, & 1 year old) camping for the first time. Real "roughin it Northern MN style camping"! 2. Go swimming with the boys instead of hiding behind fluffy clothes because I have gained to much weight. 3. Plant a flower & veggie garden. Enjoy the summer!
Ok, so not sure I could do the caked in mud thing, but you ROCK for doing so.
Second, that itty bitty crab was too cute.
My must-dos for the summer include swimming lessons for my 4 yr old son, making many varieties of frozen pops using the Zoku I got as a gift, and moving into and making a home out of the house we just bought.
http://itiswhatitisorisit.net/
My 3 top summer list items:
1. Finalize our adoption. This will be taking place on Thursday!!
2. Picnic Thursdays. New park each week with fabulous friends.
3. Craft Tuesdays...time to get creative and spend quality time with my girls!
Get our daughter in the pool for the first time.
Get to the lake at least once.
Grill out every Sunday.
I love your new header, and your swimsuit, and your girls, and your blog, and YOU.
You're so awesome, Miss Kelle :)
Three things this summer?
I suppose I'll be blogging, reading and memorizing a bunch of Bible verses -- 500, actually.
LOL I love this post for two reasons - that hilarious baby wedgie picture, and Nella's positively bursting-with-happiness smile at the end. I just want to squeeze her.
My favorite part of summer now that I am a mom, is definitely the baby pool and the shallows of the local public pools. Watching my son kick his feet and scream as the water splashes into my face (and his, much to his dismay) makes everything bad just fade away.
1. Host a kickin 4th of July BBQ
2. Go to the San Juan Islands
3. Make blackberry jam
Fun post! Three things on my summer to-do list:
1. Introduce my sweet girl to the beach...6 months old and no sand between the toes, no salt water in her hair...yet
2. Make homemade peach ice cream
3. Overdo the 4th of July with my new little firecracker (her 1st)
My to-do list is quite expansive this summer as I am reedonkulously excited as it is my daughter's first summer. But it may have to be revised as my excitement seems to supercede her age and associated limitations. (Wait - what? A 6-month old can't have a hot dog, hold a sparkler, ride a boogie board or have a watermelon seed spitting contest? Oh.)
SO JEALOUS every time you blog about your beautiful sunny weather and beach visits...sigh..
3 summer musts:
Zoo, Stow House, Beach
1. have a fun & romantic 1st wedding anniversary weekend!
2. go to Tybee Island with about 20 members of my family!
3. Get a tan!
I'm loving the matching outfits :)
Just three things? Well, if I have to choose...
1. Weekend on the coast with friends
2. Visit family in the midwest
3. Home-done pedicures with my daughter every week - she loves painted piggy-toes!
l♥ve it all, as usual.
This summer..
I want to feel moments of happiness.
I want to explore.
I want to feel the sun in my face and smile.
hugs2u Kelle!
gorgeous pics :) my must do list for the summer...give my 14 mo old his own popcicle for the first time, camp in our back yard with our girls, and keep my girls out playing under the street lights every night...so momma can sleep in each morning!! :)
OMG you look so happy that you scored that purse! Love it!! This summers to do's? There is an overwhelming amount but hmmmm...I have an urge to skinny dip this year in the lake by our house. Go to the market and buy fresh mint leaves and limes and come home and shake em up with sugar and ice in a mason jar and sit on the deck and enjoy...and basically just chill with my little ones at the park across the street..oh,and install a dinner bell on my front porch lol! Happy Monday girl:)
Those outfits are so cute! I love the bright colors.
To do this Summer:

2. Eat more blueberries!
3. Bake more cookies and let my kids help!
1. Must eat a popsicle on the porch with my little one each day.

xoxo

I enjoy reading your post all the time! Your girls are just so adorable! and Im loving Nellas pigtails..i'm thinking its time for me to try them on my youngest as well (she has about as much hair as nella :))
My three things to do this summer:
1. Go to the beach and relax and enjoy myself instead of just doing portraits for others.
2. Let my girls get dirty and not care so much.
3. Spend as much time outside as i can.
It's been awhile since I've commented, but I wanted to let you know I'm still here!! I love your June girls. And that cheeky picture? Perfect!!
Keep on enjoying ...
xoxo
Lots on our summer to do list but my main three?
1. Spend LOTS of time outside with the kids

Three things for the summer....

2. Get Wyatt to ride his bike without training wheels
3. Camp with the fam and sleep in the tent AND NOT THE CAR (I'm scared of bears).

Not gonna lie I had a dance party singing along to Summer Girls by LFO lol.
Love Nella's pigtails.
three things I'm going to do this summer? 1.) soak up as much sun as I can (if it would stop raining) 2. hang out with my friends as much as I can and 3.) BEACH TRIPS!!!!!

1. PLAY!
2. Organize all of my delicious, must try recipes I have gotten over the years and haven't tried...
3. Suck the marrow out of every minute before the school year sneaks back up on me!
1. Since you said it, now I must have it. I will be visiting family in MI and will have multiple Slurpees while I'm there!
2. Take more time to enjoy my new found passion....photography!
3. Take time off from work. I'm horrible at it. I have so much vacation time to use it's almost embarassing.
1. Take pics of the girls eating sprinkled ice cream cones (checked off this weekend!)
2. Have a picnic "on a blanket, not at a table" per my 3 year old's request
3. Make my mother-in-law's potato salad
What a lovely post... I swear I wish we were neighbors/best friends and I could manage to get my hot little hands on your girls' hand me downs! SUCH cute girls!
So my summer plans...
1. Successfully grow this baby girl through the humid michigan summer.
2. Soak in the last months as a family of three with our amazing three year old.

First thing we have to do is pack! I hate packing but that's what you get when you marry a guy in the air force!
The second, is I have to make sure EVERYTHING is organized in this packing hehe
And last, we are to travel 300 miles South West of the UK, to say goodbye to my family who I am going to miss, but boy are we going out with a bang!! =)
I LOVE your blog, so happy, so inspiring. This question is a tad mundane, but I have a little boy just three weeks older than your sweet Nella. Can I just ask how you get Nella to nap in random places? This would make our summer lives so much easier as I also have a 4-year old son who would love to spend his afternoons at the pool and not stuck at home while his brother naps.
1. Heading to northern MI for a change of scenery and a vacation
2. Photographing my girls in our wildflower field when they FINALLY bloom
3. Buying crab legs in bulk and having the whole family over for dinner on the patio
I had the same car (a different color), but it exploded in flames one day after I parked it in the parking lot at my summer job. (I think I may have mentioned that.) I sang too, but my music of choice was by none other than Mr. Ricky Martin. (-: I may or may not have belted out "Shake Your Bon Bon"` a few times in my super cool wagon. I'm not going to admit to having made my own Ricky Martin hanging rearview mirror decoration out of a thin piece of cardboard and a cut-out from a magazine either. No ma'am, that wasn't me. (-; Yeah, I've always been so so cool. (-; Darn, now I have that song in my head. YouTube here I come!
So, my must-do activities for the summer? Just three? Hmmmm... Well the baby we're adopting is due in about two weeks, so I'd have to say that one of our must-do's is going to be soaking up as much of that precious, super special little girl as possible. Basking in the wonder of motherhood has to be an awesome way to spend any day- summer or not. Must-do #2 is spending some special alone time with my hubby as he has lots of vacation time saved up that he needs to use. A lot of that time will be family time, but alone time is nice too and it is, of course, possible with little ones in the house. (-: #3? Hmmmm... I want to make time to get back to painting. Painting works on canvas has always been something I've loved, but I haven't made enough time for it over the past few years. I'd like to work on this creative outlet at least once a week if possible. I don't have to spend a ton of time on each "session" but I do want to do something related to this at least one time each week. There's more that we'll do too, but I am a stickler for rules and you did say just 3. (-:
Have fun with your precious littles this summer!
1. Trip to MI! First time :-)
2. Farmers Market
3. for my son to master the 2 wheeler!
Aren't we all thankful for AE!!

1. Have baby #2
2. Enjoy my first born as much as possible!!!
3. Move into our new home!!
I could keep going there are sooo many things that I would love to do this summer!
1 - spend as much time at the pool as possible.
2 - say "yes" to my children!
3 - get outside after dinner and enjoy sunset with the family.....during the school year it more important to finish homework and get baths and get in bed - whew. summer is for the opposite of all of that!!
1. Either maintain a house so clean I can truly welcome the visit of the spontaneous guest...or...
2. Learn to be so comfortable with the "less that perfect" house so the same spontaneous guests will be invited in with comfort and joy, comfort and joy...and...
3. Spend some time with the grandchildren...just Poppa and them...no adults, just us.
I loved the photo of the girl with "buttage" -- it's like cleavage, but behind and under. Too cute. (It is cute only on the young...just sayin')
My must do's are:
1.) Take more pictures with my girls. Need to stop always being the one behind the camera!! If they were to look back at all the pictures right now, they would think they were raised by their father! That has to change.
2.) More Snow-Cone Saturdays!! My K loves snow-cones and why I think it takes too much time to get them for us is beyond me.
3.) Buy my K a tricycle!! I am checking out the balance bikes right now!
Have a wonderful week!!

I remember finding that teal station wagon for you...and we were in the car driving you over to see your new vehicle and I remember, somewhere between our driveway and the home of the person selling the car, you saying, "I'm not picky, but all I ask is, Please don't put me in a station wagon!" And it was. Turquoise Blue. And you drove it shamelessly. You could have fed a family of four from the remnants of fast food you chowed down going back and forth to school and work. And there were enough complete outfits of clothes in that wagon to have dressed you for a week. It looked like a travelling episode of Hoarders. the ash tray was filled with lipgloss and eye pencils--like that was what it was designed for. Ultimately, I think you started it with some little toggle switch some mechanic had rigged up for you to use. You two were like beauty and the beast. While it was ultimately designed to hold up to 7 passengers, in the end, there was barely room for you. I think you would have survived any crash for all your stuff would have worked better than an airbag to cushion you. But you rocked it out. Do you remember when you were backing out of a drive, and you thought all the people on the porch were waving at you so you were waving back wildly to match their waves...you even beeped your horn at this grand farewell, only to learn they were waving frantically to tell you that you had backed right through all the garbage they had put out near the road for that day's pick up, and when you took off, you pretty much hauled it with you and spread it all over the neighborhood while you waved, smiled and beeped you way off. Too many memories of that Teal Escort. But love you still.

So I've only been reading your blog for about a year. And I heard you reference Flint, but mentioning Courtland Mall just made my heart skip and a big smile on my face. What town are you from? I grew up in Lapeer and my dad lives in Davison. We used to go to Courtland Mall all the time. I remember my stepmom not taking us to Genessee Valley unless my older stepbrothers were with us (for protection) and as soon as we got off 69 she'd lock the car. Thanks for bringing up some fun memories!

Thank you for a long chuckle on that one. Made my morning.

The first thing I noticed in the picture of Nella on the blanket is that she looks like she's clapping her hands - and I cheered! I nanny a 13-month-old boy with Down Syndrome and we are tirelessly modeling clapping, among other things, waiting for the day when he can do it too! I always rejoice when I see other children who have hit the milestones we work so hard for.
