Love where you live.

I refill my coffee cup this morning and peel off the sixteen Dora stickers Lainey has stuck to the arm of my sweatshirt as I watch my jammied girls roll around on carpet desperately in need of vacuuming. The last of the company has left, the happy whirlwind has ended. George took my mom to the airport and, for the first time, I wasn't sad when she left. Because she is happy, and I didn't have to watch from my car as she turned to wave goodbye, pulling her carry-on behind her.

All is good.

We spent the entire day yesterday ambling along the two-and-a-half mile boardwalk that encircles Cypress trees, Slash Pines and a hidden world of gators, panthers and southern birds at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.

I felt calm and present, converted into a greater admirer of nature, moved by the curiosity of my girls, inspired by the reverence of my mom and her new love who scoped the landscape with his binoculars and knew all the names of the birds like the Pileated Woodpecker and Red-shouldered Hawk.

Photobucket

Photobucket

I may not know the names of the birds or quite capture them like my father-in-law, but I did my best.

What?

Moving on.

The great thing about entertaining out-of-town company is that I rediscover the beauty of our sunny place and fall a little more in love, every time, with the elements that make up our latitude when I'm showing it to someone else. The thick humidity, the lush ferns, the tall bare trunks of our pines and the great many palms that accessorize our sun-kissed town.

And it makes me wish I would have spent a little more time when I lived in Michigan venturing out to see its best more--the dunes, the light houses, the quaint fishing towns hugging the Great Lakes. Because there are hidden best spots in every state, and the challenge lies in finding them. (We get it, right? Bloom where you're freaking planted. I'll stop beating a dead horse). And I'm again thankful that last year I was able to discover a little more about our great America, from the quiet mountains of Montana to the grand snowy splendor of Utah.

Still happy to be right where we are at this moment though.

Home.

See that one red leaf? That one little speck of red leaf? I imagine he was thinking "what am I going to do with my one wild and precious life?" and he decided he was going to dare to be different. He declared his redness against that mess of plain 'ol green because he's a badass. Look at him rocking out his fabulousness. You go, little red leaf.

Photobucket

We spotted a smattering of birds, one large lazy alligator sunning his scales on a lake island, a few turtles, and one shy squirrel sprawled out against a pine branch. But mostly, we just enjoyed each others' company amid the warmth and highly-oxygenated latitude of 26.3909143. I looked it up.

Lainey's shirt, a gift from Dig.

Lainey's newest is to grab my camera and say "Jump, Mom."

High on plant life, we finally left the swamp in exchange for a rousing game of driveway ping-pong where we cheered Brett and George as they dived and contorted and impressively conducted a steady accompaniment of Ping. Ping. Ping.

And now we recompose the emotion of our home, straightening the happy messes that arose from complacency and shifting back into our routine. Ebb and Flow, Baby.

We spent the morning lost in books.

And I'm thrilled to profess my love for one of my favorite children's literature distributors, Usborne Books, and have their Independent Consultant Amanda Collins onboard as a new sponsor.

As a former elementary school teacher, I was quite familiar with Usborne's quality, interest level and way of presenting information to kids in engaging bite-sized pieces. By far, Lainey's most favorite book in the world is There's a Mouse About the House, an interactive funny story that allows kids to hide the sneaky mouse in hidden flaps and slots throughout the book.

Definitely a must-have for every child's library. Check out the amazing range of age-levels, interests and hobbies available from Amanda's site. Order before March 15th and you'll be entered in a drawing for a $100 gift card.

A random commenter will be winning a $50 gift certificate to her store, too!

To keep it interesting, tell me your favorite magical place to visit near your home. Where's your Corkscrew Swamp, your Isle of Capri, your latitude that reminds you to be happy in your place? Spill it.

And winner of the Bambaroos Gift Certificate from the last post is Commenter #47, Aja: Major congrats on the fundraiser!!! And how sweet are your mom and George??? I love it!

Aja, please send your contact info to kellehamptonblog@comcast.net. Thanks!

Love where you live, and Happy Monday!

Sawgrass Lake Park !!! We love that park it's 5 minutes from home and right off the interstate.. however when in the park... you truly don't even realize that you are in the city. It truly is a great place to get lost walking the board walks and watching the gators.. gator babies and their momma. It's the place we stop to savor all Florida has to offer. The park most asked to visit by my sons and interestingly, this park doesn't even have a "playground." It's natures playground at its best! Big hills for rolling down... trails for exploring.

As always... thanks for sharing your beautiful family with us!

My favorite place to be in Las Vegas, is away from all the glitz and so-called sin, tucked away in my home, which has the greatest view of the mountains. I love snuggling up on the couch, watching an old Hollywood classic and loving where I live. Some days its in the comfort of a warm bath, surrounded by candles and just my breath. But for the most part, its in this home where all the magic forms...where I feel complete. Thanks again Kelle for your words. Love the pictures and I can't believe how big Nella is now? Time has flown, and she only getting more beautiful.

Our magical place is really anything outdoors because we like to enjoy all mother nature gives us. BUT 3 hours away from our home now, is a magical place where I use to live up in the mountains, where the air is fresh and the sky is SO blue. I feel at peace every time I go there.

My work takes me away from my eleven month old son for 2-3 days/week; so my happy place is whenever I reunite with him and the four to five consecutive days we spend together.

Kelle, thank you for your ever-inspiring words that encourage to love each moment where I am, even when I am missing the blue blue Colorado sky and surprise warm days scattered throughout the winter months. My favorite place where I live now has got to be the English Gardens at the Schwetzenger Castle - where precision, geometry and order meet nature. As an English teacher in Germany, I would love to add some of those beautiful books to my collection! Thanks again for your inspiring words!

Love the blog... slightly jealous of your weather as I sit in chicago watching the blizzard continue out my window. Today will be a day for living and making memories!

Here in NJ there is a great swamp park. lots of great family friendly trails to explore with a big pond in the middle. so much fun! But right now my yard is a winter wonderland covered in ice and snow. so pretty but so dangerous at the same time.

We moved from Michigan (YAY, MICHIGAN!) to SE Wisconsin 4.5 years ago and quickly found Natureland, a park within 5 minutes of our home. It's on an inlet of Whitewater Lake and has the most beautiful trails through the woods. There's a pine forest I like to just stand and SMELL! It's amazing!

(The part of this post about the little red leaf made me love this blog even more than I already did!)

I just wanted to say "thank you", sometimes I forget to lie back and enjoy the hectic and chaos of my life, seeing you find the good, the happy and the beautiful in what IS, helps on my not-too-great days.
I am "good-jealous" of your view these days, as where I live it is cold, icey, full of layers of wool and boots, and yet when Life slows down, it too is beautiful (seen from inside the window!)

It amazes me, but does not surprise me, that there are 1013 comments to your writing, as well as the great responce of your readers to the ONEder Fund.
Sending smiles from far away - and Thank you

Oh this post! The red flower picture and your words to go along with it. It's so true! I loved that. And [sigh] your mom! I've thought it before....that little lady is so beautiful. I'm betting, by the heart of her daughter, she's even more beautiful inside. [wink]

And my favorite place here....it's so easy. The river. We are about 40 miles south of the widest part of the Mississippi. We slip our boat at a cute marina there every summer and spend days on end traveling the river. Love that place!

I love this post. I have been scanning our home for little adventures to explore. Lately it's been the pastures full of horses just blocks away. I love those books too. I must have. Amanda here I come!

My family's little magical place is our backyard. It's not a large one, it's actually rather small. But it's a place where my little ones can run free. Explore the little spaces and do it uninhibited. It's the place where I can watch them, and be with them all at the same time.

I grew up here in Naples. I have so many wonderful memories and favorite spots. After moving to Lexington, KY, horse capital of the world, rock climbing in the breathtaking Red River Gorge, and hiking after work, I love to love where I live. I've moved back to Naples and while I have my spots still I long for the earth of KY. It's a gorgeous state. Full of nature, animals, and kind people. I'm trying to reinvent my Naples favorites through the eyes of my 8-month-old but having a tough time. Why is the grass always seemingly greener on the other side? Back to our spots to try to soak it in again.

35.14! Pismo Beach, CA! From our bedroom balcony I can see the beautiful white dunes and the dark dark line of the Pacific horizon. Tucked in there is a Monarch Butterfly hideout. Definitely some room for blooming 'round these parts!

I grew up in Northport, MI. Our house was less than a mile on three sides from the water (Lake Michigan or Grand Traverse Bay). 45.131 N.

If you ever make it back to Michigan in the summer, it's worth every moment of the drive. :)

Your pictures just floor me. They are so amazing and so moving. I have tried to take a picture of trees in the same way you did with those Cyprus trees....just breathtaking. I would love to learn how to do it! I always see trees and clouds arranged just so and see the beauty in them but somehow my photo never shows what I see.

It's too bitterly cold to go anywhere here, but our magical spot is the near-by state park. We go every spring and take pictures of the park coming alive.

My happy place, the spot that pulls me back together and makes me feel rejuvenated is called White Rock. Something about being near the water and watching the waves roll in and out makes me indescribably joyful. The smell and the feel of the sand just adds to the whole experience.
On another note, Usborne books are wonderful and my kids enjoy them(especially the bathtub books).

We are stationed overseas and although it's Germany (hello, Europe!) and everyone says what a great opportunity we have here, it doesn't feel quite like home. But, we are enjoying our time here and if we want to pretend for a moment that we are back in good old America we just take a walk in the woods next to an adorable apple orchard by our house. The trees surround us as they did back in North Carolina and the dog runs wild while our 2 year old explores and the baby sleeps. Ah, home away from home.

This is almost a month late.. but I'm just now catching up on my subscriptions since the semester started. I wouldn't normally comment (since I just enjoy reading and viewing).. but O. M. G. The mouse book! I had that when I was little! It was A-MAZING! I'm having a happy little freak-out moment right now. Thank you. :)
