Feed the Wolf (also known as Happy Birthday, Blog)

There is an ancient Native American story about an old Cherokee who told his grandson about the battle that goes on within us. "My son," he told him, "Inside every one of us dwells two wolves, one evil, one good. The evil one is angry and jealous, full of regret and arrogance, greed and sorrow, guilt and self-pity. The other is good. He is kind and loving, full of hope and peace, joy and compassion."

The young boy thought about it for a moment. "Which wolf wins?" he asked his grandfather.

The old Cherokee smiled and simply replied, "...the one you feed."

Three years ago, today, I sat down and registered an account with Blogger. It wasn't a very planned decision much like my other spontaneous whims. In fact, I hadn't even really thought through what I'd title it, but when the server asked for a name, my first attempt at pecking out "enjoyingthesmallthings" pulled up an available URL, so I took it. Lainey was seven months old and my heart was swelling uncontainably with this grand appreciation for motherhood and life and moments, and I needed to let the air out somewhere. That and the fact that it was mid-December, I was pretty high on Christmas, and blogging about my enthusiasm was a better choice than duct-taping the Christmas Fig candle to my face for a continuous sniff-fest. So, Enjoying the Small Things became this place. This place that has grown and stretched and challenged both my creative being and my philosophical one.

I've been asked the standard Why do you blog? question a handful of times now, and while my answer used to include all sorts of long-winded responses, it has now come down to a simple answer: I blog because I enjoy it. I also enjoy clicking "Buy It Now" for a great pair of shoes on Ebay, but blogging, unlike Buy It Now, gives back. It feeds my good wolf. And after three years, he's a big boy, that wolf. Strong and ferocious, confident and kicking.

Photobucket

Photobucket

We all have our different methods of feeding the good wolf. And when we find our wolf growing with any particular method, we make time amid our busy schedule to continue to feed it. Maybe you're motivated by running or grounded by baking. Perhaps you are inspired by painting or refueled by lunching with girlfriends. Whatever the case, feeding the good wolf is essential for our ever hopeful quest for life fulfilled.

Photobucket

And then there's this bonus that comes with blogging. And here's where you come in. For all the skeptics out there who say the Internet has replaced the beauty of simpler times and is slowly ruining our ability for real social interaction, I beg to differ. Because without the Internet I wouldn't have been able to sip frozen hot chocolate this summer around a table that felt like home amid the big city of New York, watching Kleidy hug my girl. Kleidy who began simply as a kind commenter who landed upon the birth story and left some very wise words.

Photobucket

Without the Internet I wouldn't have been able to clutch and hug my beautiful friend outside a quiet terminal in a small airport hugged between the Montana hills. I wouldn't have been able to confirm, after seven hours staying up rehashing what it is about life that we love so much, that yes, we are indeed kindred spirits meant to collide in this universe.

Photobucket

Without the Internet I wouldn't have met new, wonderful friends who came and shared our sacred beach with us on a Memorial Day that will consequently remain memorial.

Photobucket

Without the Internet, I wouldn't have come to experience this beautiful two-way street of inspiration and hope and feeling like perhaps the world is not headed to hell in a handbasket. Perhaps it is filled with beautiful voices who want to suck the marrow of life like I do. And the ones who don't? Well, I've learned something from them too. We all have something to say, something to offer. And we do it in different ways. The best comes from when we find a way to make the good wolf grow.

So, on this third year annivesary of this dear space in the not-so-void void, I want to say thank you to every one of you for reading. It was almost a year ago I used this space to express some deep pain, and I never dreamed I'd find the support I did. While the readership may have changed a bit and some talented sponsors will board here and there to offer both you and I some incentives and while this tab of "special needs" has been added to both our life and the top of this site, this blog remains what it was three years ago when I sat down and wrote my first post. It is where I feed the good wolf. It is where I remember to enjoy the small things.

So, Happy Birthday, Blog. You've given back, and for that I'm thankful.

A little trip down Header Memory Lane...

So, there you have it.

And now to give back to you. The 4 comment winners of the OnMySide giveaway are...
(I feel like Bob Barker calling down the new contestants. Do me a favor, if you win will you jump up from your computer, throw your hands in the air and scream bloody hell? Bonus if your boobs go flopping while you run...'cuz that's how they do it on Price is Right). Okay,

1) Comment #27, Niki: What do I want for Christmas? An 85mm lens. Have you used one? I tested out a friend's and fell in love! Happy Holidays to your adorable family!
2) Comment #1072, Lauren: I just got my dream job at a PR company in Tallahassee and would LOVE new work outfits :) Dance 247, I'm in your same boat and would take that over clothes any day!!
3) Comment #2, MNM's: All I want for Christmas is to have the whole fandamily together and for the Kiwi sun down in little ol NZ to be shining on the day. I'm not asking for much since that will be enough to make my heart burst with happiness!P.s. love the sea salt scrub recipe. Might well have to go into production myself :0
4) Comment #439, Christa: I really, really, really want a new (bigger) house for Christmas. I know it won't happen this year though ;o)

Proud new shirt-owners, please e-mail your contact info to kellehamptonblog@comcast.net. Thanks!
And, I so enjoyed reading your comments on this last post. I thought it was silly at first to ask what you wanted for Christmas, but there were both hilarious answers as well as ones that made me cry. Bottom line...I realized we all want the same things. We want family and love and wood floors and new cameras and positive pregnancy tests (you, not me...ha ha), healthy parents and our hearts to stop hurting...oh, and babies who sleep through the night. Here's to wishing all your wishes come true.

It's been a long three years full of rich challenges and meaningful experiences. But writing about them and photographing the things I love has made for a better perspective on all of it. And we are here. And here is good.

I've said it before and I will say it again...your blog is my inspiration. It has a certain depth and creativity I doubt I will ever achieve, but a goal to strive for nonetheless! I will say though, I am one step closer as of yesterday (my birthday). I got my "Christmas wish" you asked about...an SLR! I'm so excited to begin learning how to capture beautiful moments of my BrodyBoy! Happy birthday to your blog! So glad you started it 3 years ago. :)

Kellie, I have been reading your blog for about a year now. As with most readers, you have become like a friend. When I need to "rally" I come here to search for those little words that can make me go that extra mile. I came today, tired, worn and beat down and I will leave feeling refreshed and energized. Your words do that for so many women, everyday. Thank you from the deepest part of my soul for your words.

Happy Blogiversary! I just celebrated my 4-year on Sunday. I recently wrote about wanting to "quit the blog" because I was getting bogged down in the competition of it all. But my faithful readers helped remind me that it's not about all that stuff. I started blogging because I love to write. I must remember that as I type my heart out :)

Your photos are beautiful. Your writing is beautiful. Your girls are beautiful. You inspire me! Just a lovely blog that I'm glad I found.

Happy Blogday!!! I have been reading your blog since the arrival of Super Nella and I have been hooked ever since. I honestly cant even remember how I stumbled on to it. Your strength, words and outlook on life make me want to be a better person, a better mother, a better wife. I look forward to new pictures and new stories like I look forward to Christmas. You remind me very much of my amazingly cool mother, though obviously much younger. She has always been the kindest, amazing women with a little bit of I'm-gonna-do-it-my-way badass on the side. Thank you for all that you do for everyone out here that reads you and all the lives you touch with just being the kind special soul that you are.

Hello Kelle. Congrats on another great year of this wonderful blog. I just came across your site a few months ago and have been so blessed by it, especially since we are embarking on the beautiful journey that is the "unique needs" adoption process. We started a blog too, but nobody reads it yet. (-; Maybe I need some cool guest bloggers or giveaways or something to help. I started our blog not because I feel like I am fascinating or anything like that, but because I want to connect with other families committed to living life to the fullest, taking joy in all things and dedicating themselves to what's important. It's especially important to make connections with other people when you're a military family and are plunked right in the middle of a new town that is not at all what you are used to. It's a blessing, but also rather isolating at times. Anyway, good luck and I am sure that this year will continue on in a beautiful awe-inspiring way for you. For it is your positive attitude and good wolf feeding that brings it on I am sure. (-: Many blessings, Angie

Happy Birthday, "little" blog!

Thank you for putting yourself out there, Kelle. You are an inspiration in so many ways. I will forever remember to feed the good wolf, and will continue to look to your beautiful blog for encouragement in my pursuit to make the good wolf the stronger wolf in me.

And, HOW WEIRD! I was just yesterday thinking to myself as I noticed another cute new header, "I wish there was a way to see her previous headers. I bet Kelle has had some pretty cute ones that I missed." And, Viola! A look back...! Thanks for (yet again) reading my mind!

I look forward to all of your posts. Your blog's birthday is always touching. I got all teary thinking about how much this big WORLD WIDE web has impacted your life, how it has brought me to you, and how "small" the world really is when there is love. I know that two more big ones are coming up in the coming weeks...and I am almost as anxious to read your birthday post and Nella's birthday post as I am to write my own First Birthday letter to my baby next month! A WHOLE YEAR?!?!

For so many reasons, I am SO glad that you did not have to tape that candle to your beautiful face three years ago...!

much love, E

Beautiful post celebrating 3 years.
I (like so many others) cherish each post and check for new ones obsessively.
Why do I do this? Here are a few:
*Inspiration to be a more present mama
*discover new great songs
*have a new appreciation for life
*learn about new recipes and products
*remember to enjoy the small things
*reminisce about childhood in the 80s and 90s growing up in the midwest
*realize there are other women out there experiencing similar emotions, challenges and joys

In summary: INSPIRATION

Thank you Kelle. Happy Blog Birthday!

Kelle - you may not realize it (or maybe you do by now!) but I think you inspire so many to seek and find the good wolf in themselves and in others.

I just finished a really amazing book that I think speaks volumes to the same message you promote and that made me laugh, cry and nod my head in motherly understanding. It's called The Gift of an Ordinary Day: A Mother's Memoir, by Katrina Kenison. I can't quite grasp the idea that my three boys will someday not need me the same way they do now, and her message (as a mom to two teenage boys) is to appreciate the ordinary moments and days as a special gift that is fleeting. I've included a youtube clip of the author reading a small section. The message in this book truly awakened me further to what I should be paying attention to and the moments I should be savoring while they last.

She also says something in the book that made me think of your blog (which I am totally addicted to by the way) - that all of us have a calling, a greater purpose, and that often our gift is paired with an immense pain or suffering unlike one we have ever known. One gives life to the other - our talents are born of our pain. Nella's birth story was your starting point, and you have blessed others with your gift ever since.

Thank you Kelle, and happy bloggy birthday. :)

You know what has been getting me going lately? Katy Perry's song "Firework." While the rest of her songs may cause controversy, this song is amazing. And it'll make you want to jump around the living room with your girls while you sing at the top of your lungs.

And that's my message to you, today. Because Baby, you're a firework. And you have been a bright light in my life for the past year. So thank you.

Happy blog birthday to someone who is changing the world, one word, one song, and one photo at time.

We pass hundreds of women in the market, at schools, at stores. Sometimes we share a shy smile or a glance of appreciation at how they interact with their kids or how they are cleverly attired....

But we each move on, never meeting, never seeing ourselves reflected in their eyes. The opportunity is there just out of reach, a missed chance for another connection, another best friend.

Here in blog land, the internet, oh how I resisted and railed against this intrusion on humanity. Yet I dipped my toe in on a late night whim. Then slowly I found friends, treasured, trust with your heart friends. No agendas, nothing but offers of kindness and truth.

We easily stumbled into each other's worlds warts and all and found acceptance. I cannot imagine my world without these gals and I know each day brings an opportunity to share again with someone who knows someone, who likes something I like, who thinks I'm funny and gets my wacked sense of humor on my best and worst days.

People who do not blog cannot begin to understand how this happens. It is still a mystery, a miracle to me. I do postulate it is easier because all the pretext is removed when you share only words.

No unconscious judgement of worth or appearance, something none of us desire to do, but some how it can creep in when we meet face to face.

This is a place of births in so many respects. Births of our true sense of self, of friendships, of freedoms to explore and venture forth.

So Happy Birthday little blog. You're growing up just fine.

And I agree. I love the internet. I've met one of my greatest irreplaceable best friends on the internet as well as a slew of other wonderful women & mom's. I stay at home with my kids and don't get a lot of adult interaction but at least I know I can sign on to FB and email a friend when I need to

I loved this post. I too am a blogger (and big facebooker and general internet gal)! A few months ago, I got a bit defensive about facebook after some negative feedback I had gotten. This post reminded me of it because I SO agree-the internet has done so much good for so many people and anyone who has anything negative to say, oh well! There are friends I wouldn't be in touch with, out of town family who wouldn't get to see pictures of my children and hear stories about them and be a part of their lives, and just so much that I wouldn't know about if we didn't have this modern way of life. So thankyou for being a part of it. I have enjoyed reading every post since Nella was born (and gone back and read many of the ones from before she was born too)!

I also have a close friend who very unexpectedly had a baby girl with DS 2 weeks ago. Their story reminded me so much of yours, I referred them right to your story and your blog. I know they will find so much comfort in it, seeing your beautiful Nella!

Well, Happy Blog Birthday! I know I'm glad I stumbled upon your blog and have been so blessed by your encouraging words and realness. Little Nella's feet in that first header after she was born. So wrinkled and dry. I love it! That was fun to look back at all the headers you've made.

On a side note-did you know Taco John's is collecting donations for Down Syndrome awareness and research? I NEVER eat there, but today I HAD to have potato ole's and a Diet Pepsi. And when she asked me if I wanted to donate $1, I immediately said yes and thought of sweet Nella. So, encourage all your blog readers to go there!

Happy Birthday, Blog. Kelle~ you are an inspiration in so many ways. Thank you for your positive attitude, for handling sticky situations with grace, for being the only blog I check on a regular basis. You are awesome.

It was so fun to look through the old headers, watching Lainey grow and change, with different shots of your feet to view. Which completely cracks me up. And makes me a bit jealous of your creativity! : )

What a joy to see Lainey grow up in those header photos! I, probably like many, came to your blog after someone else linked to Nella's birth story, so I wasn't around for those early Lainey days! I still count Nella's birth story as one of the most beautiful pieces of writing I've ever read. Congrats on the anniversary!

Kelle, I'm so glad that one of your good wolf's favorite morsels is your blogging. b/c I think one of my good wolf's favorite morsels is reading your blog.

Also, thank you for posting all the headers---I really enjoyed watching Lainey grow up in them. Perhaps this could become an annual (or a just whenever you have a few piled up and think of it) tradition?

mommalivinthedream said...

Love the trip down memory lane. Silly question...how do you make such cute headers? I can upload a photo but that's it :o( Would love to personalize my site more. Thanks!

Three years is a long time, isn't it? And yet somehow not long enough, but I know you're not done at all with your "sucking the marrow" life, and us as readers wouldnt have it any other way.

One day I will will something here! I just know it. congrats, winners. I think I might just throw my hands up, and boobie flop my way around just for you all, anyway. (:

I try feeding the good wolf when I can, which is most of the time because since I was little I've always been the laughing funny trickster of a girl and its continued to this day. Everyone always tells me im funny, and I like that, but I also want to be the one with good advice and the one those can come to for comfort. All of that is me feeding the good wolf, so I try my hardest. Sometimes the bad wolf steals some scraps, and that's okay sometimes too. We can't have him TOO tiny and unfed, that just wouldn't make the fight fair at all. But the good wolf always wins out. As it should be.

Holidays are one more day closer!!

Oh Kelle:)

Thank you so much for sharing your blog headers from the very beginning! They speak volumes about you and your beautiful girls:)

The pic of you holding Nella in her darling polka-dot tights literally made me want to jump thru the computer screen to shout "Kelle, do you know how very lucky you are to have such an amazing child?" followed by "Nella is so very lucky to have such an awesome, loving, caring and kind mommy, sister, daddy and extended family!!". Your daughters are so surrounded by love it makes my face hurt from smiling!!

Thank you very much for providing a window into your warm, cozy, loving life:)

Was so happy to discover you a few weeks ago via a link someone posted on Twitter to Nella's birth story. I've been hooked ever since. Congrats on the anniversary and thank you for your candor and beautiful photos.
