Stream of Consciousness

It's been three days of my couch looking like this now.

Photobucket

And I finally decided my quality of life would be greatly improved if I cleaned up and put some laundry away. My greatest weakness will always be my issues with cleaning and laundry because I'd much rather do something fun and, although I live by that whole principal of the-laundry-can-wait-but-kids-growing-up-can't, there has to be a happy medium. At some point, I am no longer enjoying the comforts of my home because I've let it go too far and I can't even read a book to my kid without stepping on some sort of crippling toy and cursing. When I finally put the pieces back together and reorganize, I am reminded, as I sip my coffee in the morning among perfectly placed pillows overlooking an orderly family room with fresh vacuum lines and flickering candles and maybe even, God forbid, a little spritz of hydrangea spray, I do enjoy it more. My brain declutters. My stress relieves. And then all I have to do is wait for it all to fall apart again.

I wonder if, back in the day, when women practically held their worth by how spit-shined their kitchens were or how the stiffness of the collars of their husband's shirts held up, were they really this put together...or did they maintain their dignity by never talking about when they did fall apart?

I find it refreshing in this day and age that women are talking about their short-comings, their fears, their insecurities and maybe, just by doing so, we are empowering each other a little more. Accepting that we all do these things, feel these things, say these things and moving on together to overcome them.

We are not perfect. We are messy and complicated and creative and good and we try our best at so many different endeavors. And its this brew of wonderfulness that is indeed what makes us perfect.

And while I'm on the whole absence of put-togetheredness thing, I took the girls for a walk yesterday. It started good--Nella asleep in the stroller, Latte wedged comfortably on the footrest beneath her and Lainey trailing behind us, happily pushing a grocery cart full of beanie babies, a couple dog biscuits and some various barrettes.

Photobucket

Photobucket

We arrived at the lake which welcomed us with its shady tree and stretch of grass for Latte to roll in, for us to smooth our blanket on and chill out. Splendid.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Until Lainey got bit by a red ant and lost it. She wouldn't budge. I begged her to walk, to push her cart back home, explaining that I couldn't walk two blocks home carrying a grocery cart and holding a baby and pushing a stroller at the same time.

Turns out I can.

And the onlookers that got a view of that were, I'm sure, enthused. I rigged up the grocery cart with this elastic cord thingy hanging from the stroller and pushed Lainey while holding Nella in one arm and my camera in the other. I saw the UPS man go by and, I swear, I thought of waving him down and asking him to put us in the back of his truck and drive us home.

Photobucket

****************************************************************

Lainey has a new game. It's called "This one Nella?" And the name of the game is I prop Nella up between all her dolls and animals and she goes down the line, pointing and asking "This one Nella?" while I "no" and "no" and "no" until she finally shy-smiles, points to the sister and I say "yes." She loves it.

Photobucket

I spy a Nella in the swing mirror too...

Photobucket

This one's Nella...and she is magical.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

********************************************************************

Lainey got an early birthday present from her Poppa. I wanted to wait until she was older for her first American Girl doll, but their 2010 Doll of the Year just so happens to be named Lanie Holland. And since our girl shares the name and we kinda went to Holland this year and the doll is only available this year, it only seemed right.

And the doll has removeable shoes, so our girl is in heaven.

Photobucket

***********************************************************************

She is doing better about getting into my make-up. Still does it on a weekly basis, but now, she carefully applies and tediously turns the lipstick tube. And she knows what the word "waste" means and, if I catch her applyin', she says "not wasting, Mommy." And that melts me, so I let her knock herself out.

Photobucket

************************************************************************

And our delicious girl has been deep in conversation with us lately, talking with her wide eyes, drinking in our faces and kicking her little legs as she works up the most beautiful coos. They come out breathy and beautiful, soft and gentle. She has a voice. My girl has a voice.

Photobucket

Photobucket

And Brett and I get very competitive with these conversations, measuring who she "likes better" with quantitative goos. Like Brett walked out of her room the other day with a victorious grin, "Seven goos, baby." Damn. And I thought I had it good with my five. He always wins.

Photobucket

Photobucket

That's because he has the magic touch. Putting his babies to sleep, calmly rested in his strong hands...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Stirring cocoa and eggs and pretending not to notice the pieces of shell she slipped in as he helps her make brownies...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Oh, our Daddy, you make me smile. I love you.

*********************************************************************

Digging through my closet lately finding old shoes I forgot about. I like shoes. Especially ones that combine three of my favorites. Things that tie up the ankle. Things that are yellow. And Things that have cool cork wedge bottoms.

Photobucket

Now, all I need is some swishy skirts, some big sunglasses and this swimsuit, and I'll be set for spring. I've been eyeing a good retro one-piece suit and found this exact suit at Marshall's for only $20. Booyah.

***************************************************************************

And oh, how I love a good dog-in-a-sun-spot. Especially when it's cuddled next to a cute baby. My baby.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Sophie likes Nella because she's mellow and happy and she doesn't try and shove her in a baby stroller or make her sit in chairs.

And these are the random pictures we put at the end of the post because we like 'em. They need no prequel. They need no explanation.

In the meantime, we're loving life. Twirling among the beautiful mess.

Happy Friday!

Thanks for sharing a bit of your day with us..I wish I had taken pics of everyday events when my children were young..yes the more we discuss that being a mother, a family isn't always pretty, then maybe mothers will be easier on themselves and know that we all do the best we can..take care..have a great week-end..

Hi - isn't it funny how everyone wants to be the first post?! I think I might be number 17 today... ;-)

I so agree on the mess front; wish I could let it go, and I do, and then somethings got to give and we end up tidying. Its a good feeling when its done. Your baby girl is getting so big now - her features are really showing, such a cute smile. They really are such sweet girls. x

I love Lainey's game "This one Nella!?" oh. my. goodness. Precious!

Hahahaha, what would have been awesome is if you were wearing your purple and yellow strappy Espadrilles while pushing the stroller, shopping cart etc getup...oh man! I feel for you, but that would have been classic! Let's hope you had some sensible ones on!!

Hope you are enjoying today :)

Enjoy your weekend!

THANK YOU. If a mother as wonderful as you can have a messy house, too - well, then there is hope for both my house and my parenting (on a learning curve). It makes me feel better to know that you aren't perfect.

I completely agree that women are too hard on themselves AND fluctuate between having a need to appear perfect and commiserating with other women about imperfection. I prefer the latter, as I sit and type in my pajamas on a Friday afternoon, newborn sleeping in the cradle and toddler running around, stinky.

Ok. Need to take care of the second one. Stinky kids, you can't accept.

Cheers and hugs!

When I am feeling run down and frustrated with myself and how I'm dealing with the two toddlers destroying my house, I read your blog. You inspire me to be more patient, to enjoy the time I have while the babies are little and making lasting memories. Your little girls are beautiful. Baby Nella is gorgeous, my one year old loves to see her picture and giggles over "baby", when he's climbing my head while I read your blog. I'm so excited about Lainey's American Girl doll, I have so many fond memories of mine. And I'm loving the dress she's wearing in the picture!
Thank you for inspiring me.

Quick comment--busy day...so much for "delay of gratification." When Kelle called and said the doll had arrived but, Houston, we have a problem--she is begging to open it NOW. Well, because her birthday party will be a wild frenzy, I decided it was ok...and i stayed on the phone to hear the joy. Yes, what better investment can there be of our resources than to buy smiles and happiness for our littles! When Poppa comes again, I'll do some laundry folding and wash a few dishes...if you let me try another breast-milk bottle and babysitting. Have a great evening and wonderful weekend everyone! Look for beauty...it isn't far away!

Sorry for the double comment! So, take what I said x2, I guess!

Kelle, have I told you yet about Communicating Partners? You are a perfect fit, and Nella is just the right age to get started. Its a very natural way to get late talking kids talking...and though she isnt exactly LATE yet, she may struggle with it because of the DS. I cannot recommend anything more highly than CP. There is a listserve, and you can get a lot of tips there. I would suggest ordering Play To Talk by the man who runs CP, Jim McDonald. GREAT book. and buy her a harmonica. Uh...better buy Lainey one too. :)

haha - I'm laughing because I just wrote about how letting the housework go is MORE sane for me right now in my blog.

Thank you for all that you share, but today's post especially touched my heart. I was just sharing with a friend of mine how I get envious some times when I visit blogs. The photography skills. The beautiful, stylish moms. The amazingly bright crafts. The organized and clean decor. The brilliant homeschooled children. Etc. Etc. Etc. And ironically, it was after visiting your blog yesterday that I was overcome with this feeling. Thank you for sharing your normal today. And thank you for cherishing that precious child of yours right along with that radiant big girl! Unexpected circumstances, like my daughter's autism, but still an enormous blessing. Thank you for your transparency. I needed it today from someone as talented and gorgeous as you.

Had to laugh out loud at your story about having to carry a shopping cart, two kids, a stroller and a dog home. This EXACT thing has happened to me on more than one occasion (yes, you think I would learn). Mine usually involves a 4 y/o riding off on her bike, with me in hot pursuit carrying a pink doll stroller on one arm with a talking Elmo doll in it that won't shut up, screaming 20 mo old under another arm and two Jack Russell Terriers bouncing around on their leashes. Oh yes, we are quite a sight! But what is life without a little adventure, right?? Have a beautiful weekend :)

I love your blog! Thank you for sharing your day to day with us.
Reading about your adventure walking home made me laugh. I've had to carry many a thing home with with stubborn boys in tow. A friend finally had to put a jope rope in her diaper bag in order to tie the trike to the stroller for the trip home.
Thank you for sharing.

Kelle,
I love reading your blog! I too have a Lainey (spelled the same way, which is odd cause everyone else I've met spells it differently). My daughter Lainey is 11 and like Nella has Down syndrome. She too is beautiful and oh so perfect like your girls. Your blog almost always makes me crybecause you so eloquently express the overwhelming and completely all encompassing love for your children that I have felt as a mother, but never put into words. Thanks! I hope to meet you in Orlando if your family goes to the National Down Syndrome CongressC annual conference.

So, happy medium-yes!

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who lets laundry pile up - speaking of - I have a laundry basket of clean laundry that's still sitting on the floor of the laundry room waiting to be put away. Perfectly imperfect...I'd pick fun over laundry ANY day Kelle. Speaking of which, this post has guilted me into finishing the laundry that has sat in a heap on the laundryroom floor all week...LOL. Thanks, I needed a little motivation. It's so good to see that you aren't totally together all the time because honestly sometimes I look at your life and I think, Man, everything is so perfect...and I am TOTALLY not. I am simply amazed at Pappa's perfect, perfect gift for Lainey, I mean really, Lainey Holland??? It surely is a sign...and This One Nella??? Sigh...I'd love to spend an afternoon being part of all that beauty. Your girls are delicious!!!

Hmmmmmmm Nella's blue's, love them with navy hat...WOW 7 goos eh, and I bet He did NOT have to deetle any either ...lol...What do they say 'bout girl's and their Daddy's, well I think it something like their first loves, so Kelle although you are to Nella the breast of survival, Dad still will always get more coos and goos, just cause, cause she is secretly in love with her Daddy ! *winks* ....

Oh and BTW, your couch still looks comfy, all you need to do is get more more fancy laundry baskets, some woven one's and it doesn't look so bad !...lol...There is nothing I hate more then to fold laundry, I think the woman of generations past were more obsessed with such task cause there wasn't home entertainment like there is today, TV. WWW, and even the children were not as heard as they are today, you know what I mean, they were seen but not heard kinda thing, so what else was there to do then laundry and house clean...lol ...But it's true one does feel more organized and stress free when it's done, but one's that live in houses that are in complete order, well they lead Idle lives they say ...I think, No offence to anyone I hope, cause sayings are NOT always true ! ...*warm smiles* ...Have a great w/e !

Anyway, everyone keeps telling me to take it easy. Come on, people, it's not like I'm cleaning my baseboards or organizing my books alphabetically. The laundry, the dishes, and the vacuuming has to be done. And I'm the only one who can do it! :)

Beautiful pictures of your beautiful life! My 2nd son turns two tomorrow. Oh, wow. The most bittersweet and amazing two years of my life.

You know what I love? I love going to a friend's house and having it be all messy. Really I do. Makes me feel less stressed and more human. If I'd go there and everything is perfect, then I'd feel bad about myself, so mess is good.

Love the Nella tootsie picture, looks like her little feet are praying!!!

And that cinnamin roll is to die for, much better than the CARROTS that I'm eating right now!! :)

Great Post! lots of love showing through. Currently my youngest is bathing our schnauzer so he can be in the pet parade tomorrow. Can't even imagine what I'm going to discover in the bathroom when she's done. Her enthusiasm to be READY for tomorrow keeps me from caring.

Though, I agree, once we clean up & put away I feel the tension lift, feel more READY. But, sometimes shutting the door to the messy room does the same thing!

The Nella game description with the picture has my heart smiling.

Thanks! ;o)

Must say that your post today has made my day! It was one of those laundry exploding, toy store blew up in my house days. And as I sit here with the my two oldest watching a movie, I sit back and realize I did as much as I could. I struggle to find the balance between being a great mom to my five and constantly cleaning up after them during a day! I want them to remember mom got on the floor and played with me when I was little, not that my house was sparkling clean always!
Love the "This one Nella" picture, honestly awesome!
Thanks...

kudoos to rocking out the two block walk with your arms, literally, FULL!

Seriously, I could read just one blog, this one, and be happy forever. I always end reading it with a smile on my face...that game "this one Nella?" is precious. Love the pictures of the family on the wall.
And I've definitely learned as a mom, if I think I can't do it (carrying Lainey and ALL that stuff) I'll actually BE doing it shortly there after.
ps...my house always looks like that. Our hallway is perpetually littered with clean clothes.

My 2 year old is getting a kick out of sitting here on my lap, pointing at Nella and saying, "baby!" every time he sees her picture. :)

we played the same game with our littlest when she was born -- my husband would prop her up with all the american girl dolls we had (I think SIX! ridiculous!) and we'd take pictures and send them to family showing off all our "dolls" -- haha!
and of course our Lainey got "Lanie" from her grammy this year -- because it seems to be what grandparents do for their Lainey's when a doll comes out with their name!
lastly -- I'm amazed at how your Lainey applies make up so perfectly -- she's a natural!! be proud mama!!
happy weekend!

It's good to know that I am in good company today with having a house is disarray. Apparently, it is time to put away our Easter baskets....or at least that's what my almost two year old seems to be telling me. He had an Easter grass party in the living room this afternoon. I'm prefering to think of it as lovely chaos. Enjoy your weekend!

You are singing my song today. Your couch is what the whole floor of my bedroom looks like, I keep washing, and then can't tear myself away from a good game of Candyland in order to put them away. Thanks for being brave enough to put the pictures of your messy house on here. It makes me feel better about my own mess. I love the way a clean house feels, but I usually only get that feeling maybe 4 times a month.....if I'm lucky! Everytime I clean it I promise I won't let it get that messy again, but a week later and its back! I also literall laughed out loud at the picture of Nella in all the stuffed animals! So cute!!!

Tomorrow is the day. We will sweep into action and clean like maniacs for a couple of hours so we can enjoy it all weekend long. If it is put off any longer the dust bunnies will get together and unionize!

Seriously can the line up of Dolls and Nella be any more adorable??? Love it. Way to go Super Mom with your stroller and shopping cart. Oh and I am thinking we are going to have to get the Lanie doll as well. I got teary looking at the pictures of Nella Bean in the brown and pink sleeper Jana had the same one. She is not walking yet but cruising around furniture and pulling up on everything in sight. Today she stuffed Muffins in the DVD player and colored on the wall. After you get your special gift you appreciate things in such a different way. Instead of getting upset about the blue coloring on the wall I took a picture proud that my Princess could color on the wall. Life is so wonderful when you stop to enjoy the small things:)

Today's post: a call for friendship and sisterhood, all united by our shared strengths and weaknesses. Wonderful!

Lainey and Nella are GORGEOUS! The pictures where they are smiling are so sweet! Thank you for sharing your treasures!

Kelle, you are so right:
"...women are talking about their short-comings, their fears, their insecurities and maybe, just by doing so, we are empowering each other a little more. Accepting that we all do these things, feel these things, say these things and moving on together to overcome them." It is important to share our stories, to embrace our emotions, to honor our truths, to be kind, to support each other and to feel that we are all connected. =D

Much Love~

"I have come to believe that by and large the human family all has the same secrets, which are both very telling and very important to tell. They are telling in the sense that they tell what is perhaps the central paradox of our condition—that what we hunger for perhaps more than anything else is to be known in our full humanness, and yet that is often just what we also fear more than anything else. It is important to tell at least from time to time the secret of who we truly and fully are -even if we tell it only to ourselves- because otherwise we run the risk of losing track of who we truly and fully are and little by little come to accept instead the highly edited version which we put forth in hope that the world will find it more acceptable than the real thing. It is important to tell our secrets too because it makes it easier that way to see where we have been in our lives and where we are going. It also makes it easier for other people to tell us a secret or two of their own, and exchanges like that have a lot to do with what being a family is all about and what being human is all about." -Frederick Buechner

my house is a chaotic mess of laundry and toys too.. i read somewhere that in order to be an effective mom and wife, you need to give up some things. i'm a medical student, a mom and i love to cook, so those are the duties i religiously stick to, day to day. it keeps me sane, and keeps my life prioritized, even if the house is a disaster area and drives my hubby nuts sometimes. i'm glad i'm not the only one facing this dilemma. your girls are gorgeous! no wonder you'd rather spend time with them than do the laundry!

That picture of Nella in amongst Lainey's soft toys and the image of Lainey saying "This Nella?" "This Nella?" until she gets to her makes me melt. And also, the picture of Lainey putting on lipgloss and blush makes me melt. You are teaching the world beauty. I first noticed Nella's almond eyes at your birth story before you let on about her down syndrome. Now, looking at Nella and looking hard, I can't find her hints of disability. I don't see anything different in her except she is a different baby like all babies... they all have their different eyes (DS or not). You are teaching the world! Keep it up! My best friend is in a wheel chair and after years, I find it hard to see her chair. I must make myself look for it... you are doing that with Nella.

How very much I love that you shared your *normal* house with us today. Debunking myths of perfection is, I think, one of the best ways we can help each other as women. Heck, as humans.

Motherhood is a job I thought I was well-prepared for... after working in Hollywood for 10 years I was used to multi-tasking & keeping my cool as those around me acted like 2-year olds. Come to find out there is so much more to it. What I find most overwhelming is the grand scope of the job itself... raising well rounded kids in a clean & orderly house with healthy meals & clean clothes... (oh so many clothes!) Oh yes, and finding time for myself somewhere in all of that as well. HA!

This is where my son's extra chromosome works it's magic for me... he reminds me every day that what is important is the do-ing, the try-ing, the love-ing... not the outcomes. (Does that make sense?)

Whew! Stream of consciousness post leads to stream of consciousness comment! :-)
Happy weekend!!!
Cheers,
Kate

I love the couch!! So true, and thank you. My confession: Our bed looks like that at least 4 out out of 7 days. I SAY dumping it all there helps me get all the laundry put away faster (like incentive: I can NOT go to bed if it's there, ya know?). But it still usually takes 2 or 3 days. Many evenings I am rushing to scoop it out of the way so I can nurse a tired baby on meltdown. Then after baby is asleep trying to shove the baskets into an out of the way spot, so my husband doens't trip over them and wake every one up in the middle of the night. He still manages to trip and wake at least once a month. Best laid plans...

Maybe I need to let the laundry grow some where else?
The girls are beauiful as always. SO been there with the grocery cart/stroller/dog issue. ugh. I've learned never to leave theh ouse wiht out a Mei Tai to strap toddler to my bach. Oh and I love the startled Nella pic!

Kelle, I just have to say wow. Just wow. I look forward to every one of your postings, since your blog's i one of the few that I follow regularly. I shared it with my mom awhile back, and she'll bring it up every now and then, and what you talk about. I'm a thinker. A lot of people say thats a good thing, but to me, sometimes it doesn't play out that way. I think myself into ruts, and struggle to get out. Today, it was about silverware. Yeah, silverware. It's complicated, but its about the path we travel. We each have different things we encounter, and it's like forks. Sometimes, we get on the salad fork. Sometimes its the big serving fork. Or, you could get the plastic fork that breaks. In the end, we all have different obstacles to overcome, and it all depends on how we look at it. Reading what you come across, and then just pluge through, and come out clean (well, pretty clean :)..) the other side, still positive & full of faith/hope. It's how I want to be, and live my life, and in the end, maybe help change someone else's life.

Steph, a good thing to remember about silverware is, it is superfulous to eating. Watch a child. We have to teach them to use the silverare. They see the simpler route of "grab it, shove it in your mouth, eat it." We complicate things in our attempts to refine it. Had we no silverware, we would still eat. Perhaps we should try such a meal...just to remind us--it's not about the silverware (a word we still use, though we should be using "stainlessware" as we generally do not use silver...but then, I am thinking too much again). But the meal we enjoyed with no silverware would be a memory forever in our family album.

We have done the same thing with lining up all the naked baby dolls on the couch and putting a diapered baby in the middle....one of my most favorite pictures to bring a smile to my face!

Join "The Club!" - I have so many other things I'd rather be doing than cleaning - so don't feel bad! And if I had 2 darlings like you - I wouldn't get squat done - they are only young once and you can never get the time back - take full advantage of it!! LOVE LOVE LOVE the pics! Keep 'em coming, Rockstar Mamma! XO

Ahh, love this post so much! So real. I have that happy medium in my house right now with, not too many dust bunnies and only a few dishes in the sink....but by the end of the week, fuhgedaboudit.
The pictures of Lainey putting on makeup made me laugh out loud a little. Cuteness!

When I watch Mad Men aside from loving it with a mad passion, I am always taken back by how women were just so repressed and felt that they couldn't really talk about life.

I totally agree, sometimes we must let there be mess to make time for twirling! :)

I just found your blog through someone I follow, can't remember who. 1. I love your blog! I like how open and honest you are. 2. Nella is gorgeous. The picture of her little feet is amazing. They look so perfect! Like baby doll feet :) She is absolutely precious!!

Thank you for sharing your life with us.

Oh, but how I struggle with the balance of work and play! Some of my friends are under the impression that I clean all the time, because I tend to put things away and organize the clutter... but even if things look "neat," they are rarely "clean"! I don't remember the last time I dusted.

I often wonder how women did things Back Then. Especially when it would take all day to do laundry, or day to make the meals. I guess the downside to all this technology is that we're expected to do EVERYTHING all in a day's work, and those expectations are too high!

Hehe, I love the visual of how your walk turned out! I've done that before - baby in a carrier, holding a toddler and her doll stroller. At least we're getting in some strength training while we play, eh?

Lainey's "This one Nella?" game had me giggling. I could SO see my little girl doing that! Teehee. Just looking at that cute, plush line up is giving me fuzzies inside.

Definitely magical.

Haha the egg shells in the brownie batter made me laugh.

Looks like she is getting really good at putting lipstick on already, maybe she can do mine? I am so bad at makeup, I don't wear it and I am 25!

Adorable photos Love them.

Oh, how that baby stroller laden down with a shopping cart and blanket reminds me of my own such adventure, when my three-year-old son declared he couldn't peddle his trike another block. And that trike had a little red wagon trailing behind it. I'm sure neighbors had their noses pressed against their windows, watching the lunatic mom haul a trike and a wagon on a jog stroller, a three-year-old on her hip, and a itty baby in the stroller seat. Good times. Love your blog. Love your photos, your writing, your outlook on life. You rock.

I am with ya on not being put together AT ALL and I am learning to OWN it. It's not easy. Before kids, my house was spotless and laundry was always done in one day. Now I'm lucky if I get the basket back down to the laundry room by the time "laundry day" rolls around again on the calendar. Sure it's messy and there are fingerprints all over my glass french doors and cheerios stuck in my carpet, but it's beautiful b/c they belong to my little boy. Thanks for being a mom the rest of us can relate to!

I am soooo hooked on your blog!!!! I LOVE seeing the updates!!I am sure you have had many suggestions from Moms with children with DS but....here is one of mine....I was told to keep a mirror in the crip and on the floor when the baby is playing. It really did stimulate my sweet baby boy. Have you started Early Intervention??

Hi ... I had a baby girl 2 months ago on Feb 26 and she has DS. Her name is Sophia. Two people have sent me a link to your blog :) Love the photos and wondering what kind of camera you use? You must be a professional but I would love to be able to caputre Sophia's eyes as hers are a beautiful blue color just like your baby girl. We also didn't know about the DS until after she was born. I also wondered where you get theose cute hats? Thanks for sharing your life. It touches many people. Jill
